Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Dec 06, 2016 10:59 am Hello all, I thought this was an interesting topic, just how does one maintain a reasonable perfect post height installation on say building a carport. For some this will be a no brainer, but for me I get a little bamboozled when I try to visualize how to do it. I know it has something to do with thinking of the laser level in terms of being upside down. (This is a way to visualize how to go about it) Here's why you might want to set posts (Pre-cut to length) Say again, we are erecting a carport and we want to chisel out some nice corners. It makes logical sense to do this work at ground level. Or maybe you are using steel for your carport and you and to concrete the posts into the ground....how do you establish a consistent height. (You may have special brackets on the top of your prefabricated posts) I have a 360 degree rotating laser with a 5 meter marker along with the laser detector. My question is whats the simplest way of utilizing the laser level so that I can maintain laser level accuracy with my post heights? (In other words, how do I set the posts at the same height using laser level?) Thanks in advance. Thanks for your message. Unfortunately I don't really understand what it means. I looked up datum, I am assuming its a stick used as a marker?? How does this work with a laser ? Thanks Re: How to establish post heights with a laser level. 5Dec 07, 2016 5:09 pm Every post or stump must have 100-150mm of concrete under it. In your situation where you have a number of posts and you want the tops to all be level and you want to do all your checkouts on the ground before you concrete the posts in,pour a pad in the botto0m of each hole, around 100-150mm deep. When this has hardened off,set up your laser level in the center of your proposed carport. With your laser rotating,go to every hole with a piece of timber or a staff if you have one,and stand it in the hole, resting on the the pad you have poured in the bottom of the hole. When the laser comes around put a pencil mark on the piece of timber and mark it HOLE ONE. Do this to each hole,HOLE 2,HOLE 3 etc and you will know how much shorter or longer each post must be to to reach your level line that the laser is marking from the bottom of the hole.Measure up from this mark to your desired height. The mark that your laser is shooting is the datum. All your posts may have to be 1500mm above the datum or whatever is your chosen finished height, and now you know how long each post has to be BELOW the datum mark to reach the concrete pad.
