A week after installation, all of my stair treads split.
Strangely, this happened within the same 12 hour window as a water leak which impacted the lower platform. I have time stamped photos that show the chain of events
Now, the splits in some of the upper treads seem to have closed up a little however the splits to the lower platforms are getting deeper and going further along the platform.
The builder (state manager) said this is not a defect, that all timber splits, and that it should look fine after staining. He can't guarantee they won't open again and said the 'fix' which would involve cutting out the impacted section and sticking in a replacement bit of timber may look even worse/split again.
Usually I'm pretty resourceful but I am too distressed to find a reference in the Building Code or standards and tolerances that indicates whether this is a defect.
Help and guidance would be appreciated. I'm at the end of what I can handle with this build.
Lower platform now
