Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Oct 16, 2016 11:22 am Hi, Was hoping someone could point me in the right direction. We have a 1 year old townhouse, and since the day we moved in we have had issues with banging noises in high wind. It sounds like a metal flexing then in really high wind there is also a crashing sound. I've had my builder back twice and he can't see anything wrong. It's gotten to the point where we're going to move out and rent the place out, as my wife and I have lots of sleepless nights from it. My daughter sleeps in the other room which doesn't have the issue, though you can still hear the noise (but it isn't anywhere near as loud). However, I can see this an ongoing issue with tenants, which is going to be equally annoying. I've stuck my head up in the manhole when it's happening, and I can't see any movement in the roof cavity. This leads me to believe it's external. My suspicions are that wind is blowing up the ridge capping and causing it to flex and unflex hard. I really can't see anything else. If you look at the second and third photos, you can see the ridge capping and where wind can possibly get in. I've talked to both my neighbours, who have no noise issues so it's isolated to me. I've attached a few photos to give you an idea. Above the window to the left is where the sound seems like it's coming from. View from the road (we are the house to the right) View from the road 2 Where to go from here? Should I get an independent roof inspection? Should I get my solicitor involved and try and sort it out the builder? I just think I'm going to end up in circles and it might be easier to get someone out to just repair it. Re: Colorbond roof loud banging in wind advice needed 2Oct 17, 2016 10:28 am Hi, I had a similar issue with a Colorbond verandah that I actually built (so I only had myself to blame). The issue was the flashing at one end was lifting up at one end ever so slightly when a gust came by. Effectively I created a wind tunnel and had not screwed in the flashing enough. My containment (usually at some ungodly hour) was to shove some rags in there till I properly screwed everything in. The only way, and hence my suggestion is to wait until a windy night/day and try and locate the sound. Your problem sounds like is to be able to do this safely. My gut feel is that there is one or two screws missing in a small area that happens to be freakishly picking up wind. Ain't that the truth! We used to have a tile roof and had it replaced with colorbond and suddenly everything throughout the entire house sounds louder! 4 6692 Your house roof does not show rusting other than some surface rust on the flashings. In my opinion you dont need to replace or paint the roof other than treat surface rust… 1 10214 You should pressure clean your roof first and make sure the paint you buy also is anti mould. 4 18573 |
