Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Aug 07, 2008 11:03 pm Hi! I just got some new timber flooring installed. The original quote included installation and the take-up of old ceramic tiles.
Two weeks after installation, while waiting for my bill, i get a call to say that it's going to cost $1000 more than the quote because they had to do some extra levelling of the floor! They've undertaken the additional work, which costs additional $$, without my permission. To me, the quote is a contract. If i had've got a call BEFORE they undertook the extra work, i wouldn't be so worried. Any ideas on where i stand? I got the actual bill today and they've brought it down to $380 following my quite irate telephone conversation. thanks in advance for any advice! We had a couple of instances where the quote was less than the final figure but the tradesman told us what was going on. Good example would be the installation of floorboards which cost quite a bit more than expected due to uneven joists. Only occasion when a tradesman didn't let us know and changed the original quote was a botched up job of our ornate ceilings. Suffice to say we declined to pay him but thats another story. There is no way I'd be paying the extra. Re: final bill higher than quote 4Aug 08, 2008 8:16 am Yep - if they didn't call you to approve the work before they started - I wouldn't pay a cent more than the quote.
Tell them they can rip it up and take it all back! After 4 years - we're in! Re: final bill higher than quote 5Aug 08, 2008 8:37 am I'd check the fine print on the quote ... if it says E&OE* somewhere, then they can change it to cover any errors/ ommissions in estimating. Also if it says "Estimate" rather than "Quote", then it is implied that there could be a variation in the final bill.
*stands for "Errors & Ommissions Excepted" Re: final bill higher than quote 6Aug 08, 2008 8:45 am Extra levelling of the floor! What an unexpected thing to do. This must be the first time in the history of flooring that there has been the need for levelling. How could the supplier who put the quote together possibly have anticipated such an event!
... OK, moving from sarcastic mode to serious mode... When a quote is put together, the supplier is the expert. They know what contingencies to include. I would not be paying the extra charge. Demolition August 2009, Construction Started September 2009, Completed December 2010 Re: final bill higher than quote 7Aug 08, 2008 10:59 am Unrelated to housing but a similar situation, I put a ring in at the jewellers to be resized, requesting a quote before they went ahead. The ring only cost me $24 (I think I was still in highschool). They went ahead and resized it and wanted me to pay $40 for the resize. Obviously this was an ok price for resizing, but because they didn't tell me it was going to cost that much, and I wouldn't have gone ahead with it if they had told me (almost twice the price of the actual ring I was unwilling to spend), I refused to pay and they had to give the ring back.
Moral of the story, if there is no clause in the initial agreement, definitely don't pay any more than what you were told you would need to pay. Re: final bill higher than quote 9Aug 08, 2008 9:27 pm This is true that the slab needs to be levelled in many cases when wooden flooring is laid. You could even ask ur builder to do it for you even if you get the flooring done from somewhere else.
$380 is very much reasonable for living areas of 29 square huse, however $1000 is way too much. On the other hand, i agree with everyone here that the trady should have informed you about the cost involved before taking uo the work. Re: final bill higher than quote 10Aug 09, 2008 8:42 am No chance they'd get an extra cent out of me!!
