Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Sep 05, 2016 12:50 am Hi all, I have just finished constructing a storage platform for firewood to keep it off the ground. Everything is treated pine - the posts are H4 and everything else H3. I have sprayed any sawn ends of the timber with the green wood preservative. I would like to paint the wood to help keep it in good condition as well as have a better appearance. Can anyone confirm or recommend the correct products to use for primer and top coat? I have read different things recommending acrylic or oil based paints. Do the areas with the sprayed preservative need any different primer or paint type? Because it is just for firewood I am not looking for a premium finish so very basic (cheap!) paint would be OK. Would I need to sand this type of wood or is it ok to just paint straight on? Re: Painting treated pine 3Sep 13, 2016 2:19 pm renoauction Why paint them? The treatment is designed to last. Two reasons: 1. Most of the H3 frame is LOSP treated - and it is highly recommended to paint LOSP to keep it's warranty - so I think it's a good idea! 2. Appearance. Even though it is just a platform for firewood the location makes it stand out with the surrounding area and I want to match the other wood work in the areas that is painted. Also, the different H3 and H4 treated pine sections are different colours (H4 is much "greener"). If the platform was down the back of the yard I probably would not worry about painting at all. Re: Painting treated pine 4Sep 13, 2016 2:26 pm An update since the original post - for a "non-premium" job like this most of the advice I got from various paint shops is that a couple of coats of most exterior paints would be OK as they are self-priming. I do have another question about the "floor boards" to go on top of the frame. I have bought the 150mm wide x 25mm deep H4 (CCA treated) pine sleepers. They are rough sawn and although paintable it will be easier to do if a bit smoother. Provided I take the appropriate precautions with face mask, safety glasses etc is it OK to lightly sand treated pine and not affect a) my health and b) the treatment levels? These are the bits that will be in contact with the firewood so I want to make sure that they are still OK against any termites etc. DIY, Home Maintenance & Repair Are you going to have the frame exposed or are you cladding it with something. Usually if you are making an exposed frame you would use solid legs around 100x100 or… 3 6584 I’m just in the process of replacing 2 stud walls that have been severely damaged by termites and am planning to use h2 blue pine. I just wanted to if anyone can advise… 0 52856 Hi, as per the subject. Does anyone have any recommendations for the best value decking oil (Bunning is close to where I live) for a treated pine deck?
