Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Aug 02, 2016 3:35 pm I am looking at buying a house which has a large first floor balcony made from timber - its like a large upstairs deck. Is it possible to concrete over the timber? I don't like being able to see through the gaps as I am slightly scared of heights and I don't feel safe on little planks of wood!! I also thought the underside of this could then be modified to add in a light / fan etc so you would have a covered dinning space in the garden. I understand concrete is heavier than timber so would you strengthen then balcony and then cover in concrete sheeting? Would this costs a fortune and/or absolutely not possible? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Re: Timber Balcony - Can I concrete it? 2Aug 05, 2016 9:14 am Hi Ghux More info required..and photos would help? Generally engineers don't like using concrete slabs on top of timber (tho formwork is an exception and you can get an idea from formwork how many props are required for support .) You might want to consider CFS trusses, steel beams/ columns etc. the concrete slab can be 85mm thick (1 Brick gauge height) if supported on permanent metal soffit, trusses at 450mm centres 1-WS,600mm 2-WS, etc,etc Estimated Costs $50 to $150 /m2 respectively HTH Designer,Engineer (Civil,Const & Envir),Builder,Concrete & Masonry Contract.Struct Repairs First time building 2 storey home in NSW.
