I have always used Origin Energy ever since moving out of home for the first time and have always found their rates to be reasonable and competitive. Family members of mine use Lumo who I believe are also very competitive, but in most cases you will be signing up to a minimum 12 month contract, so be wary of any additional fees such as ongoing account fees, connection fees, etc. To give you a guideline on Origin Energy, we have 3 people in our home with varying schedules, and during winter in a 3 month period (we use the heater quite a lot) we spend approximately $500.00. There are plenty of ways you can bring this cost down though, such as making sure lights are turned off when not at home, have your hot water service turned down, and making sure your appliances aren't on standby. Ceiling fans are also a great alternative to air conditioning and to help circulate heat in winter - they can help save dramatically on energy bills. Hope I've been able to help!
