Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Jul 03, 2016 4:09 pm G'day, I have a 10 mt x 10 mt galvanised iron on timber shed. I want to add a Awning - Lean To extension at the back. The roof extension will be 2 mt. This will allow me to store timber etc. to keep dry. I would like to know the what size timber I will need for the uprights, would 100 x 100 be strong enough? How far apart should the posts be? What size timber for the beams. I live in the bush so I do not need approval. I would appreciate some help please. Perry Re: Adding a Awning to a shed 2Jul 04, 2016 10:01 pm I would build the lean to out of steel. The termite generally leave steel alone. 64mm square steel posts and 150x65 C sections for the rafters. Most Steel merchants can provide a design & supply service. They can also supply fixings flashings and gutters. If the lean to roof is flat use kliplock roofing sheets. They can be used down to 2 degrees pitch. Re: Adding a Awning to a shed 3Jul 05, 2016 6:41 am G'day Beetaloo, Thank you for your reply. I would prefer to use timber as I have a friend that can get treated hard wood cheap. How many posts would I need and how far apart. The fall would be an inch as I have a rain water down pipe going to a Tank. Cheers Perry Re: Adding a Awning to a shed 4Jul 05, 2016 9:53 am A 200 x 50mm MGP10 beam supported by 100 x 100mm posts @ 2400mm span will be all you need. Three 75 x 50 battens for the roofing and you are sweet. Just remember to use tie-downs and bolt the beam to the posts and the posts to stirrups on a concrete pad. It gets pretty windy up in Maryborough !
Edit : I should have added that for a span of 2000mm use 100 x 50mm MGP10 rafters @ 900m spacings. A lot of guys space them @ 1200mm but it's just harder to walk on a roof at that distance. Some speed bracing over the lot to stiffen it up wouldn't go astray either. Stewie Re: Adding a Awning to a shed 5Jul 05, 2016 12:07 pm G'day Stewie D Thank you for your reply.
