Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Jul 01, 2016 2:10 pm Hi, Apologies if this is sort of off topic as I am neither a builder or a renovator. I am a scientist seeking practical advice on how to polish a steel beam surface to a smooth finish. I'd like to attach a strain sensor to the steel beam using industrial grade epoxy and I therefore really need a smooth finish. I have made a valiant attempt already using an angle grinder with a sort of metal brush attachment, it removes the rust but the surface is still quite pitted. Could anyone recommend something? Preferably an angle grinder attachment? I've been to Bunnings but don't see anything suitable. Many thanks in advance! Re: Steel beam polishing 2Jul 02, 2016 8:44 am You are in for some hard work! Once steel becomes pitted you basically have to grind all the steel around the pitting down to the same level which could take quite a while. If you are only talking about a relatively small area say 200mm x 100mm to attach the strain sensor then obviously it won't take that long. Something like this http://audel.com.au/zec-24sc339-semi-fl ... m-24-grit/ attached to either a grinder or electric drill will get you most of the way there ( sort of a cross between a sanding disc and a grinding disc ) then finish it off to a smooth finish with higher grade sanding discs 200-400 grit. Before I read your post I had already gone and bought a "Diamond cup grinding wheel" (http://www.dta-aus.com.au/products/RGD100TC). Seem to be making a dent. But you are right, its not easy! Cheers!
