Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Jun 06, 2016 9:22 pm Hi, I am painting a new house with plaster walls, which is near Perth. I have developed bad poisoning after only a few hours, with windows open and mask. I want to know if anyone knows of a water based sealer/binder that I can use which will do the same job? I am afraid to use this paint again. Re: Oil Based binder/sealer 2Jun 06, 2016 11:23 pm I don't know why you'd be using an oil based sealer to start with. Most painters I know would use an acrylic based paint on the walls and maybe oil based paints for the wood trim - architraves , skirting etc. Stewie Re: Oil Based binder/sealer 3Jun 06, 2016 11:37 pm Hi Stewie. Two stores in Perth advised me that this was the only option, that you had to use an oil based binder/sealer. If I left the plaster for many months before painting would I still have to use a sealer? I just don't trust what the stores tell me now as they may just give advice to sell their products. Re: Oil Based binder/sealer 4Jun 07, 2016 8:08 am If you have a standard built home in or near Perth which would be double brick external walls and single brick internal walls then plastered with sand/cement and a white set over the top then I can't see why you'd need an oil based sealer. That's if the walls have been plastered well with a nice smooth white surface free of holes and defects and as long as you allow long enough for the walls to dry before you paint then an acrylic sealer/undercoat would have been fine. I just had a quick look at the Solver paint site which said an oil based sealer/primer is recommended if the walls are very porous. I'd assume that this paint would help fill smaller holes by being elastomeric. I would also assume that they may recommend that as these days there may be some additives in the white set or sand/cement mix that may react with the acrylic paint if the wall is not sealed properly with an oil based primer. In my experience an oil based sealer is used sometimes over a previously painted surface but over plaster ? I seem to recall all internal set walls being painted with acrylic on any jobs we were associated with. If you go onto the Dulux website and have a look at their FAQ's I'm sure you'll find some answers there.
