Browse Forums General Discussion 1 May 25, 2016 3:29 pm Just thought I'd see other people's opinions about our fence. A section of the fence was damaged when the demo guys pulled a tree out (roots under the fence) so they were going to mend that section. Then the gale force winds hit Perth on the weekend and the entire fence was flattened! It was beyond repair - there was the section that was destroyed by the demo, plus some areas had holes in. However, if we hadn't been building the fence would have remained in place and probably been fine for a few more years. So, dilemma is whether we approach the neighbours and ask if they want to chip in? Or, do we just go ahead and wear the cost ourselves. I'm inclined to think we should pay for all of it, although I know from another property a fence aint cheap, and is likely to be at least $8,000... Re: Dilemma - fence blew down.... 3May 27, 2016 8:31 am Our fence blew down while we were OS. I am now claiming on insurance Unfortunately, Since your fence was damaged during the demo weakening it and you have posted on-line...I fear your claim should, you have one on storm damage insurance, maybe void. LOL, Nothing like a big storm to force the fencing contractors to put prices up. I would claim insurance. In WA the standard procedure will be to deny the claim, if that happens explain you will go to the insurance ombudsman. It happened to my rental in Harvey and they ended up paying half of the 11k fence Re: Dilemma - fence blew down.... 5May 27, 2016 10:09 am AussieMark Many fences cost at least 8k. Over the years I have had several fences get blown down and the insurer I had (no longer with them) first denied the claim before eventually paying. Just saying. Re: Dilemma - fence blew down.... 8May 27, 2016 8:36 pm " dilemma is whether we approach the neighbours and ask if they want to chip in? Or, do we just go ahead and wear the cost ourselves." If it was just because the fence was old and couldn't cope with the storm I would ask the neighbours, but since your demo undermined the strength of the fence I wouldn't in that circumstance. I'd try your insurance and if no go, try to pay for it yourself. Going to the neighbours (who likely know you removed that tree) is going to cause bad blood imo. Not all insurance companies are bad. We had damage all over the place from that hail storm in Perth a few years back and RAC didn't balk at any part of the claim. I'm not sure your claim would stand up though because it was partly your demo work to blame, not just the storm. Could you replace that part of the fence now and the still standing portion later? Even if the fence has holes I don't think that necessarily requires your neighbour to agree to a fence replacement. Re: Dilemma - fence blew down.... 9May 27, 2016 9:41 pm Althom Agreed, you should always have a second go when an insurer denies a claim. They are very keen to take your money but nowhere near enough understanding is shown when you need them Insurance companies are a joke. I lost my 4 year old $1200 partial denture being dumped by a wave at Noosa. My claim for on travel insurance was initially denied because I didn't report it to the police. When I argued the point that it wasn't stolen and that it was probably washed out to sea, they offered me $200 allowing for depreaciation, but reminded me I had to pay the first $200 of the claim. Back to the Footy.see ya. Re: Dilemma - fence blew down.... 10May 28, 2016 5:54 am Can't believe its $8k. How long is the fence - and what material is being used ? Re: Dilemma - fence blew down.... 11Jun 02, 2016 6:20 pm What kind of insurance would we have? We don't have any building insurance because there ain't no house there! The fence was old and wasn't buried very deep so pretty flimsy. However, the reason it blew over is because the demo guys had removed a section, plus I guess there was no house next to it to shelter it from the winds. As for the cost, I'm just basing it on a similar size fence we had replaced at another property a few years ago (2010 actually). It cost $8k!! It was split between 4 owners (the owners of each of the duplexes on either side of the fence). It was a Colorbond fence. I had no part in organising the new fence as I had a property manager looking after the duplex. I hope I wasn't diddled!!! Anyway, back to my current situation I feel obligated to replace the fence but as it was such a crappy old fence to start with I'm not sure we should foot the whole bill...however, they are having to live next to a building site so maybe we should.... Re: Dilemma - fence blew down.... 12Jun 02, 2016 6:37 pm mmmm, now I've rung a fencing supplier and a Colorbond fence is $85/metre installed (some is into limestone). We'll see...maybe not a dilemma if it's not as expensive as I thought. And now I'm wondering about the previous bill....... How long is a "long period"? For a few weeks, it should be ok.
