Browse Forums General Discussion 1 May 16, 2016 3:28 pm Hello, I am hoping someone is able to offer advice. We are going through a contract builder who offer limited appliance packages. We prefer to supply our own (greater choice) but have been told we will do so at our own risk. The appliances cannot be insured either through builder insurance or personal insurance. Or so we have been told. This means if they are stolen or damaged during the build we are up poop creek. Has anyone gone through something similar? I think I will approach an insurance broker. Or not other? Thanks - forgive typos as I have a toddler that will not leave me alone. Re: Supply own appliances for new build - insurance? 2May 16, 2016 3:36 pm Don't get them installed until after handover is the best option. That is what many builders do. Re: Supply own appliances for new build - insurance? 3May 16, 2016 3:51 pm I am worried they won't fit or something like the stovetop hole being cut incorrectly and then we are up for more $$$ Re: Supply own appliances for new build - insurance? 4May 16, 2016 4:10 pm We supplied our own appliances which were installed the day before handover, but have to admit our builder didn't mention anything about who would be responsible in the event they were stolen. You need to lock in your appliances and supply the specifications to your builder. As long as they don't change the builder will be responsible if for some reason they don't fit. Stovetops will come with a cut-out template you can download from the web and dishwashers/ovens have inner & outer cabinetry dimensions. Cabinet makers don't have the actual appliances when making the cabinetry, they work off the dimensions, so shouldn't be a problem. Re: Supply own appliances for new build - insurance? 5May 16, 2016 5:03 pm Radiuz did you organise someone to install them or did the builder? Re: Supply own appliances for new build - insurance? 6May 17, 2016 9:12 am We also supplied our own oven, cook top, range hood & dishwasher. The kitchen manufacturer wanted the dimensions and the items were installed just prior to handover. Builder didn't mention who's responsible for insurance and fortunately we had no issues. Re: Supply own appliances for new build - insurance? 8May 20, 2016 7:18 am Thanks everyone. I ended up contacting the commercial supplier directly and they can get a larger range of appliances in. I also got them to price a couple and they were cheaper than appliances online so we have decided just to go through them. Hoping to start a build thread soon when we get the final drawings. Re: Supply own appliances for new build - insurance? 9May 23, 2016 10:12 am I bought this up with our builder - Coral when we were building. They do not cover any owner supplied fixtures or appliances. Also you cannot get insurance for these good separately as it gets too messy if someone leaves the door open etc, who is responsible. Our good were installed 2 weeks prior to handover and nothing happened. That's a fantastic result! Happy you got it sorted out. cheers Simeon 6 8647 Hi Suku18 In NSW the statutory required insurances are: 1. HBCF ( Home Building Compensation Fund) - This is if the builder dies or goes broke. The benefit is you can tender the project out… 9 20432 |
