Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Apr 28, 2016 5:18 pm We are building a ranch style house with a rather long hallway which gives access to 3 bedrooms, rumpus, laundry and bathroom. Its currently at 900 mm which I believe to be minimum. I'm not sure if this is wide enough and not sure I want to pinch some space from the other rooms. Would love to know your opinion. Thanks Re: Hallway width 3Apr 28, 2016 8:59 pm My hallway, in a ranch style house, is 900mm and it feels quite narrow for two people passing each other, especially when one is a bulky male. I would always have one metre if I could. On the other hand, if you need the space in the living areas, and it doesn't feel narrow to you, just leave it. Re: Hallway width 4Apr 28, 2016 11:52 pm My first house had 900mm wall ways and they were too narrow. A standard door could not be opened fully to allow large items to pass. My present build has 1100mm hall ways. They look and feel just right. There is a 100mm return either side of a standard 900 door frame. Re: Hallway width 5Apr 28, 2016 11:58 pm I grew up with 900 wide hallways, in my current home the rear hallway to the bedrooms is 1200 and the difference is definitely noticeable. In saying that, if the rooms are tight, I wouldn't want to steal too much space from them. In those circumstances, 1000 would be a good compromise, only stealing 50 from rooms either side of the hallway. It's a lighting question, the control joint is only needed at 12m centres, a bulkhead or change of direction will suffice as a 'break' in the ceiling, just make… 8 5875 |
