Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Jul 27, 2008 8:43 pm What do all you guys with real wooden floors do when you have visitors, do you ask them to take their shoes off? a daft question I know but was chatting to the guy laying our floor yesterday and he said about the only thing that will really damage it is stones stuck on peoples shoes and stillettos !!! my neighbour to be is a dinky little thing and she does love her stiletto's, do you think she would be offended if I asked her to take her shoes off before she comes in the house??
Jeez, the things that go through your mind when your house is all shiny and new Re: Wooden floors and visitors!!! 2Jul 27, 2008 8:53 pm We'll be having timber floors (from the front, right through all of the living area). If I had a neighbour with a penchant for stilletos, I'd be asking her to remove them chez moi!!!!! I don't think I'm going to be overly AR where 'normal' shoes are concerned - I have 4 kids ( and hopefully 3 of them won't really be interested in wearing stilletos ) so they'll probably cause enough wear 'n' tear on the floors themselves! Solidarity, not solidity.......The Lexicon of Life Re: Wooden floors and visitors!!! 3Jul 27, 2008 8:55 pm Thank God I've got tiles - then you start the "they are going to dirty my floor!"
I think with your neighbour, right from the start tell her to take her shoes off (make sure you haven't got any on ). I have found if visitors see a pair of shoes at the front door they automatically take theirs off - so maybe have the customary pair live there for a while Paula Re: Wooden floors and visitors!!! 5Jul 27, 2008 9:41 pm No shoe policy... this is the main reason i go for wooden floor (personally i like tiles more), because i really don't want people wearing shoes walking into my house... I think I'll be asking people to take off their shoes, the anxiety of possible scratches will be too much for me to bear, I want to be able to enjoy my visitors! I think most people will not mind too much. Having said that though, we intend to have a big house-warming/DD's 1st birthday / my 35th / DH's 40th all rolled into one mid next year, and I can't see myself asking ALL those people to take off their shoes, especially when it is likely to spill outdoors, where shoes will be needed... Maybe I'll be over my preciousness by then Re: Wooden floors and visitors!!! 7Jul 27, 2008 9:54 pm I guess we'll all cry after the first scratch and then it will get easier, lol Re: Wooden floors and visitors!!! 8Jul 27, 2008 10:16 pm hi, having recently gone from tiled floors to our new house with solid timber floors we most definately have a no shoes policy, grab a few pairs of communal moccy's and leave them nice and handy is what we have done.
Cheers Dave Re: Wooden floors and visitors!!! 10Jul 27, 2008 11:41 pm I would never dream of asking people to remove their shoes in my house. I think if you're that precious about your floors then you should have installed different flooring.
I also know how much DS's feet smell and would never dream of inflicting that on anyone else. Jeez, the things that go through your mind when your house is all shiny and new WHy don't you put a witty sign at your front door targetting stilettos since these are the heels which do the damage ? EDIT : oops Bec already made that suggestion. But you could modify one of those that people use around pools & toilets if you can't make one up yourself. Judie Yes, I agree. My brother & sister-in-law did the same and insisted all take off their shoes. I was insulted. I was wearing flats at the time. I regard myself as being quite considerate of other people & would never have worn anything to damage their floor - I felt that they went too far ! I wondered what was more important to them - their family or !@#$%^ floor ? ! After that I simply ignored the no-shoe policy. Everyone followed suit. And after a while they got over their floor. Stilettos are a whole different matter !!! Then again my sister-in-law is quite precious so maybe I have issues with her & not the floor policy Built the Eden Brae Cambridge 34 Family with Boston Corner Facade Re: Wooden floors and visitors!!! 14Jul 28, 2008 8:07 am Its only really stilettos I have a problem with not shoes in general!
Believe it or not I would (ha ha!!) have actually preferred a laminate floor but hubby insisted on real wood !!!! Re: Wooden floors and visitors!!! 15Jul 28, 2008 8:44 am No issues with shoes on....although at the moment people take them off out of consideration for bubs who is on the floor....but I'm not that precious about the flooring to make it a "rule". mmm....donuts Homer Simpson 1956- Links: Site Costs Ready Reckoner | H1 Addiction Medical Advice | Château TDL: The Backyard Re: Wooden floors and visitors!!! 16Jul 28, 2008 9:37 am I would target only the stilletoes people and if you are friends with them you can always suggest to them at the time of invite not to wear them... and by the way, stilletoes damage tiles as well, I have seen many a cracked tile from them.
Maggie Re: Wooden floors and visitors!!! 17Jul 28, 2008 10:02 am I've just discovered this issue when looking at flooring on the weekend. I really wanted timber, but on the advice of the flooring people I'm going laminate. Not just for the shoes, but I mentioned I have cats and they said they might scratch the floor. Re: Wooden floors and visitors!!! 18Jul 28, 2008 10:09 am my feeling is why cant we be precious bout our floors if people can be precious bout their stilettos....floors cost a whole lot more than one pair of shoes
I had someome put enormous scatches in my last one while she was sitting down talking at the table, moving her stilettos across my floor I found out later, scratches were like 6 inches long * I really want a small polite but to the point sign* Re: Wooden floors and visitors!!! 19Jul 28, 2008 10:48 am bec * I really want a small polite but to the point sign* How about: Unless you're this cute....please take you shoes off!
