Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Mar 23, 2016 9:03 am We'll put one in each room, and a couple in living areas. Do I need more than one behind each TV? And do we need them at the front and back door (I've read security cameras use them - maybe something for the future)? If so, where at the front door? Re: How many data points did you put in? 2Mar 23, 2016 9:10 am And did you put a point in the garage? Have read that solar PV systems need one... Re: How many data points did you put in? 3Mar 23, 2016 9:13 am Here is a plan of the data points in our new build. you really need two at each point as you need room to expand in the future. You could run an extra Cat 6 cable after the build, but it is up to you and if those points are accessible after the build; some of ours are not. In regards to camera's; most run off Cat 6 also, but as said before you can run the cable yourself after the build. Also remember if you are going down the IP camera route you will need a point ran to where you will keep your DVR (somewhere burglars arent going to go looking for it. Ours will be hidden in the bedroom upstairs in a secure box. Below is a plan of ours with all the Cat 6, TV points and Cat 6 ran to the IP cameras. http://i1033.photobucket.com/albums/a418/Aussie141414/Untitled.png Re: How many data points did you put in? 4Mar 23, 2016 9:28 am Thank you, that's VERY helpful...especially as your house is similar layout as ours! Re: How many data points did you put in? 5Mar 23, 2016 12:41 pm We put 13 in. We did media, office and activity room for the kids in the future. I also put one on the ceiling for a central Wireless access point. 90% of domestic gadgets are WIFI now, even security cameras can be wifi unless you need PoE. How many data points did you put in? 6Mar 23, 2016 4:17 pm I'm currently with Bigpond on Fast Cable. We got data points in the following: 2x Office/5th bedroom GF 1x Media GF 1x Family GF 1x Garage (connects to Study nook FF - future NBN), 1x Garage 1x Leisure FF 1x Masters bedroom FF 1x Study nook FF 1x Study nook FF (connects to understairs) 1x Cable point - Study Nook FF (current location of my dual band cable modem/router) 9x Cable points - Understairs GF. All cat6 cables terminate understairs connected to a 16port gigabit switch (8 PoE). First floor has full wifi coverage provided by the cable modem/ wifi router. Our Solar PV system connects via wifi to record data. I'm using a 5port gigabit switch in the Family for TV, gaming console and 2 other gadgets that can connect using LAN Same set up as above with the leisure. Re: How many data points did you put in? 7Mar 25, 2016 8:13 am I've currently planned for dual points to all bedrooms, kitchen, and three points to the media room, loungeroom and study nook all cabled back to a patch panel in the garage which will have the Cisco POE switch and NBN equipment. There will also be a cable run for a POE wireless AP in the middle of the house. And one to the roof space for who knows what (likely a future DVR/security camera setup). Overkill, probably , but it gives plenty of future flexibility. Re: How many data points did you put in? 8Apr 04, 2016 11:05 pm A suggestion for data cabling for CCTV You opt to run all your cables to the Hub, this will allow you to run the NVR at any room in the house that has a data point. Cheers. Hi, Which model Netgear Presage did you use and does it get hit under the stairs given the is no ventilation there? Does it have a built in fan and ISO it is noisy? Cheers Re: How many data points did you put in? 12Mar 12, 2017 6:56 am I have put 12 cat6 outlets in our house back to a rack, but only because I am licenced to do it myself. If I had to pay someone I'd probably just run a couple the TV and put my modem/wifi router there, and plug my smart TV etc directly into the router LAN ports. Everything else I'd run off wifi. Hi, Which model Netgear Presage did you use and does it get hit under the stairs given the is no ventilation there? Does it have a built in fan and ISO it is noisy? Cheers Hi, I got the Netgear Prosafe 16 port switch, 8 of which are PoE for any devices that will require it in the future. I've got a 3m ceiling height in the entry which includes the understairs. Given the space inside the understairs and the built-in fan of the switch, they're sufficient enough to diffuse the heat generated by the switch itself and the noise level is very minimal. I've had no problem with it since my set up 2 yrs ago. Hobbes Re: How many data points did you put in? 15Mar 12, 2017 7:58 am Since I am a registered cabler and could do it myself for the cost of materials plus my time, I have about 70 points spread across a dual occupancy house (5 bedroom main house and 3 bedroom in-law accomodation). Each bedroom has 2 x 2 port plates (one on each side of the room). 2 behind each TV plus sundry points around living rooms. 12 in the study. Re: How many data points did you put in? 16Mar 12, 2017 8:57 am Do you need that many points ? In house? Thats surplus small suburban office dont have that many ports .. good on ya mate but its overkill as wifi are strong enough if u would have spent $500 on 2 of the Ubiquiti UNifi AC Pro google it that could have served all your problems as things are moving to wifi, and my friend registered cabler went for it on his double story house works like a charm covers far greater area. Re: How many data points did you put in? 17Mar 12, 2017 9:14 am Yeah it's overkill and I do have UniFi WiFi, but I didn't want to be limited in the future, and the cost was only about $40 per point for me. Keeps everything neat and central. Funny thing is I only use one of the outlets. I patched directly from the NBN NTD to one of the outlets behind the TV and put the modem router there. The TV, XBox and Bluray player is plugged in to the LAN ports on the routet and everything else in our house (around 15 devices) are all wifi. Everything works great.
