We're just finishing off engineering for our house. We were going to have a 5m wide double garage door, but now it looks like it may have to be 4.5m for structural reasons. The garage itself is 6m wide. Will the 4.5m door be wide enough? How wide are your garage doors? 4.5m seems a bit skinny - is the garage a bit longer so that you'll have enough room to drive in and then veer left or right? After 4 years - we're in! The garage is 12m long! But the rear part is supposed to be a workshop and store. We might be able to extend the door to 4.9m but that means that there will only be 200mm between the right hand end of the door and the right hand wall and so I was wondering whether it was worth expanding it..... Mazda 6 or Subaru Outback (mid sized sedan) is 1750 to 1800 mm wide excluding mirrors. Mazda 3 or Hyundai Getz (small car) is 1650 to 1770 mm excluding mirrors. How wide are your garage doors? Thanks Simon There is no 'standard width' as such for double garage doors. They can be made any width to over 6 metres. However, the standard width for single garages is generally considered to be 2400mm. So one could assume that a standard double width should be 4800mm. Having said that our double garage door is 4680mm. I guess you could try putting a couple of posts on the ground 4.5m apart and see how you go. Re: How many metres wide is your double garage door? 7Jul 25, 2008 11:36 am TDD - I think the extra 40cm in the garage door might be worth it if you don't want to sacrifice any of the length. Simon It's not about synchornised parking.... ....generally you back straight into a garage...as you need to be able to get the mirrors to pass each other, and then you need to be able to open the doors. Not sure if you have kids but getting them into a car - baby seat or booster and putting on there seat belts without opening the door fully is a pain in the a*se. mmm....donuts Homer Simpson 1956- Links: Site Costs Ready Reckoner | H1 Addiction Medical Advice | Château TDL: The Backyard Re: How many metres wide is your double garage door? 9Jul 25, 2008 12:01 pm to_do_list Not sure if you have kids but getting them into a car - baby seat or booster and putting on there seat belts without opening the door fully is a pain in the a*se. Yes I agree. The thing is though, the garage is 6m wide, but due to engineering requirements we will have to spend some money if we want the door to be more than 4.5m wide. I think tomorrow I will do what floorit suggested and mark out the garage with sticks, and then drive both cars in and see how it feels. Thanks everybody for the help. If it costs more to upgrade/extend I would live with it! Re: How many metres wide is your double garage door? 12Jul 25, 2008 5:08 pm Our double door is 4.8m wide and both of the single doors are 2.4m wide - we are lucky however to be having a garage that measures 13.41m by 10.24m. I would be erring on the side of generosity - TDL, I agree with you. I have a 3yr old plus a 1yr old - new safety laws mean that these kids - plus any more in the future - will have to be in booster / safety seats until they are 8yrs old so I would want the maximum amount of space to be able to move around the vehicle (also doesn't help that DH drives and F150 and me an Explorer ) Re: How many metres wide is your double garage door? 13Jul 25, 2008 7:29 pm If the garage is constructed from brick then the opening size would be made to brick modules. Generally a double opening would be 4810 & a single 2410. Peter Clarkson - AusDesign Australia www.ausdesign.com.au This information is intended to provide general information only. I think the garage door width is good, but would have liked an extra 0.3 m garage width. How much more is a slightly wider door. I think 4.8 m is a good width, so maybe something between your original figure and the new figure would be just right. Generally a double opening would be 4810 & a single 2410. It's not brick, it's ICF, so it can be any width.
