Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Feb 23, 2016 10:56 am Hey guys I did a quick search but couldn't find anything. Just wandering to reduce noise from water pipes say when someone is having a shower or flushing the toilet, should we be insulating the pipes, wall or both to reduce the noise that it creates? Thanks Re: Insulate wall or pipes to reduce noise? 2Feb 23, 2016 11:27 am I have no idea about the pipes but I am thinking of putting acoustic insulation within two of the surrounding walls of our main toilet, which is an 'internal' (no exterior wall) toilet which is fairly close to the kitchen. I don't want to be listening to 'water falls' or otherwise, whilst cooking or just being in the kitchen!! I have done a bit of research and think I will just get some pink acoustic bats and do it myself before the plastering is done. Will obviously let the supervisor know. I figure even a bit of sound insulation is better than none when it comes to this! For the cistern, just close the isolation valve a little. There is no need to fill a cistern in the fastest possible time. 3in1 Supadiverta. Re: Insulate wall or pipes to reduce noise? 4Feb 23, 2016 4:30 pm I should have pointed out that this is for a new build. Just wandering if people notice it in their new builds. In the rental we are currently in, I just realised that when someone has a shower in the main bathroom, the person in the adjacent room gets to hear the pipes making a noise the entire time the shower is on. As for the toilet, will try turning the tap down on the cistern as suggested. Re: Insulate wall or pipes to reduce noise? 6Feb 23, 2016 6:39 pm We have done both. Wrapped acoustic insulation around the pipe work and also insulated the walls with acoustic insulation. Easy job to do now compared to many years of listening to it! Time will tell if it works. Re: Insulate wall or pipes to reduce noise? 7Feb 23, 2016 8:51 pm Thanks guys. Doubling up on wrapping pipes and insulating the wall sounds like the way to go. Now its just a matter of whether i add it to the build cost and get hit with the builders margin being added or i cross my fingers and hope the SS lets me do it myself. Re: Insulate wall or pipes to reduce noise? 8Feb 26, 2016 2:40 pm I have insulated the upstairs toilet, vanity plumbing with the foam stuff that concreters use for thier joins as well as normal batt insulation in between floor. It comes in a roll and you just wrap it around the pipes and then wrap duct tape to hold it all in place. Works very well for little effort. Cannot hear any flushing noises whatsoever. A friend calls doing this "lagging". Our 6m high Cathedral ceiling has 0 insulation, just plaster, wrap and tiles as far as I can tell.
