Re: Should I get rid of my gutter mesh? 7Feb 14, 2016 12:44 am There are three predominant problems with gutter mesh. 1. The mesh is often too fine and can clog. Yours has a good % of open area and shouldn't suffer from this problem. 2. Many fine mesh designs restrict the natural flow of water off the roof into the gutter that cross flushes the gutter from the front to the back during heavy rain. This restriction allows sediment to build up and seeds deposited by birds to germinate. Your mesh does not interfere with this ability to flush but unless you have a superior flushing gutter like the half round, sediment will in time still build up regardless. 3. Most gutter mesh systems do not have maintenance access areas where you can easily remove sections of mesh every 4-5 metres and give the gutter a squirt with a hose. The lack of maintenance access sections is a bad design flaw that will often create a dangerous situation should someone try to remove screwed in and often also siliconed sections of mesh rail from the gutter's top outer side that the ladder is leaning on. If yours is also completely sealed, then at least the mesh weave's good open area % allows water from a hose to be directed through the mesh and the gutter should be relatively easy to clean. The come in 1 meter sections that are around $18 each. The benefit with these is you can pull them out every 6 months or so and just hose them down to clean and then pop them back in. Part of the plan of installing something like this is to allow for some maintenance to be done every six months or so. People think installing a gutter protection device is the be all and end all of any clogging problems. It ain't. It will go a long way to keeping your gutters free of debris but you still need some basic cleaning every once in a while to remove any sludge that builds up on the bottom of your gutters. Stewie Re: Should I get rid of my gutter mesh? 10Jul 11, 2016 5:42 pm bobg I purchased a home a couple of years ago and I need to get the gutters cleaned. However the gutters have mesh over them and a couple of gutter cleaning companies I've called have recommended I pull it up and get rid of it. They say its just making things worse. http://imgur.com/a/bjJgD Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ This photo is proof that even the more open meshed gutters still require regular maintenance. The mesh and the way it is fitted seems identical to yours. EDIT 26/12/2023 Reposted photo. Original had disappeared. Note the lack of access sections where a hose could be used to flush sediments. 3in1 Supadiverta. Rainwater Harvesting Best Practice using syphonic drainage.
