Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Feb 09, 2016 9:21 pm How big is to big in relation to floor tiles. We are building a new two story home with upstairs living, Kitchen etc. We are looking at getting 600 x 600 floor tiles laid on top of the yellow tongue up stairs but some people have made mention there is a very strong chance we will end up with tiles cracking. We went along to Home World at Kellyville yesterday and I wasn't so impressed with the laminated floating floorboards and the Bamboo. They all seemed to have that plastic clunking sound when you walk on them so now we are back to going with tiles. Any thoughts on the size of tile on the yellow tongue. Should we screed? How big is to big in relation to floor tiles 2Feb 09, 2016 11:38 pm My partner is a tiler and he says it would be fine to tile upstairs. First you need to put down tile underlay over the top of the yellow tongue floor. Put the underlay down in a brick bond pattern opposite to the yellow tongue. It needs to be secured with LOTS of nails or screws, (there are dots on the underlay to show how often). Also, use a rubber modified glue for the tiles. The glue needs to be spread on the floor and under each and every tile. You will go through a lot of glue but it is the only way to go! Don't do any screeding, there's no point. PS Don't leave any tile spacers between the tiles because the rubber modified glue allows for some movement. If the spacers are left in the tiles will eventually crack. He has repaired lots of jobs over the years and main culprit is usually because of spacers being left in. They're in fashion, and seem to overcome that issue. Re: How big is to big in relation to floor tiles 4Feb 10, 2016 10:07 pm Thank you twylamc I really appreciate your advice. That is exactly what I was after. The tile underlay I'd imagine you can buy that at Bunnings? As well could I ask what brand of rubber glue would your partner recommend. Would Davco Ceramaflex be OK? How big is to big in relation to floor tiles 5Feb 10, 2016 10:31 pm Yep, he says the tile underlay sheets are sold at Bunnings. They come in different sizes too so get whatever you need. They need to be butted up against each other without big gaps. The sheets are around $12-$18 depending on size he thinks. As for the glue, the Davco Ceramaflex is pretty good. My partner has normally just used a generic rubber modified glue from Beaumont Tiles here in SA. (he swears all shops get the same stuff and package it in bags with their shop logo!) It is good stuff and not a bad price. Glues can be mega bucks and you're going to need a fair bit. PS (again) Use a 12mm notch trowel for your 600 x 600 tiles.
