Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Jan 27, 2016 11:41 am Undergoing some renovations and am in the midst of getting quotes to replace a small section of old earthenware pipe with PVC (as I am going to be concreting over the top of an existing concrete slab where the pipe is currently). I have been astounded at the quotes coming back for such a small section – even with me cutting and excavating the concrete myself the quotes for around a 3-4 m section to be replaced are around $2000. I am obviously grossly misunderstanding the work effort as I am shocked at these quotes. I have also been told by 1 out of the 3 plumbers quoting that it is not 'up to code' and essentially illegal for me to concrete over the top of this pipe without replacing it with PVC – does anyone have any knowledge of this? Re: Earthernware pipe replacement - expensive!! 2Jan 27, 2016 1:32 pm Plumbers are some of the biggest con artists around. Dont believe anything they tell you without double checking the info with your local council's plumbing section. What is the pipe actually for? sewer, stormwater, etc? What is the purpose of the concrete you wish to overlay, and what is the size of the current and intended slab? $2000 is BS if it is just straight replacement and nothing else. Dont believe anything they tell you without double checking the info with your local council's plumbing section. There are some good ones out there...but they can be very hard to find. I have come across many more bad ones than good ones. qebtel $2000 is BS if it is just straight replacement and nothing else. Yep. They are probably high balling because they don't want the job. Ask friends and neighbours if they know a good plumber who won't rip you off. BTW: Cutting and excavating the concrete yourself still leaves a lot of excavating to do, your quotes would no doubt be considerably less if you also excavated and exposed the pipes beforehand. 3in1 Supadiverta.
