Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Jan 26, 2016 11:24 pm Hi, I am new to home reno's and never chosen flooring before. Our dilemma is we have chosen new carpet for the bedrooms but are keeping the current floorboards in all other rooms. The solid timber boards sit directly on the slab and are about 12mm thick, however the underlay and carpet I have chosen will total 30mm - substantially higher than the adjoining boards. Other than the issue of shaving down the internal doors, do you think this will work? Or look ridiculous? Cheers. Re: Carpet 20mm higher than floorboards 2Jan 27, 2016 3:17 am are you sure it's that high? Underlay is usually around 10mm and I had a plush pile layed a few years ago that was another 10mm (it was a tall carpet compared to most others). So technically I guess it sits 20mm above the adjoining hallway with floorboards. The doors had to be trimmed at the bottom but apart from that no it doesn't create any problems. I don't actually think it even looks that much higher and when you have door strips dividing the two surfaces I think it tends to be less noticeable too. Re: Carpet 20mm higher than floorboards 3Jan 27, 2016 7:24 am Ditto to what piscean has wrote. We are having top of the line underlay and thick carpet and ours is only 18mm. With trims across the doorway the difference should be negligible. Check with your carpet supplier the finished height.
