You can now get reveals in metal. In my extension I have timber reveals on windows but plaster reveals on two doors and it looks nice together with square set ceilings. Re: Plaster window reveals 5Jan 22, 2016 8:48 am One of my clients did this a few years ago along with P50 shadowline to all the ceilings viewtopic.php?f=38&t=68113 and shadowline around all the doorways as opposed to architraves. It is a very clean, minimalist look. It suits his place with the style of the house but may not suit all. You also want to make sure that your blinds and curtains can be mounted OK. Stewie Re: Plaster window reveals 6Jan 22, 2016 1:30 pm All very good points. I have heard they aren't as easy to clean, i.e. matt vs enamel paint. timber reveals still need cleaning No cats, so not an issue. building-expert, for the doors are you referring to fact they don't have architraves? I've seen them, and like the look, but am worried movement and therefore cracking as doors gets slammed. bashworth, tiled? are you referring to say splashbacks? Stewie D, that's a great point. I'll only be using these for 4-5 windows, all fixed windows which wont have any window covering anyway. But you should still be able to mount blinds inside the window frame onto the horizontal timber studs (long screws). How do you do a shadow line around the doorway? Do you know much much extra plasterers charge for shadowline ceilings. While I prefer decorative cornices I'm going square set ceilings as it suits the house better, but it looks too plain for my liking. I think shadowline ceilings would be interesting and clean at the same time. I'll be owner building again. Re: Plaster window reveals 7Jan 22, 2016 2:06 pm You could fit extra stud to lock side of opening trimmer for stiffness or use sheet metal reveals. It is the same product used for doing the shadowline profile on a ceiling as against a door for the same rebated look. With the shadowline detail your framers have to be switched on and do a good job. Same as for the window treatment you are considering Also forget using matt paint for anything. It is impossible to clean without leaving a patch where you have been. You are much better off even with ceiling paint to use low sheen. Edit: Looking for another detail I just found an example of this around a door and the section detail http://www.cavitysliders.com.au/detail- ... shadowline ( OK it's for a cavity slider but the same principal would apply for a swinging door ). Stewie Re: Plaster window reveals 9Jan 23, 2016 10:12 am Thanks for the info. I was thinking how would you tile around the door frame with a shadowline? Wouldn't the tile thickness stick out? I should have said low sheen vs enamel. I've used low sheen in bathroom ceilings in my old house as ventilation was poor but wouldn't use in normally. Re: Plaster window reveals 10Jan 23, 2016 2:16 pm Unless you made the door jamb stick out from the wet area plasterboard or villaboard the thickness of the tile + glue then use a small channel similar to what external tile corners are like. Something like a 10mm x 10mm U-shaped channel or angle xup against the jamb would give you the same shadowline effect. You would of course have to run your wall tiles floor to ceiling. Stewie Re: Plaster window reveals 11Jan 23, 2016 10:30 pm Hmmm gotta speak to my Carpenter to see if he has done this before. The door jambs will probably need to be custom made. I'm getting solid internal doors so it wasn't going to be a pre hung door jamb kit anyway. As the tiles are on only one side of the wall the jambs won't be symmetrical. I think you can just use tilers aluminum angle to create the shadowline. Thanks Stewie. I'm meeting up with a Plasterer I've used before tomorrow to get a quote for a reno, I will discuss with him the shadowline ceilings and door jambs. Re: Plaster window reveals 13Jan 25, 2016 12:21 am Thanks Stewie I spoke to my Plasterer today and he's had experience with plaster reveals and shadowline ceilings and doors.
