It is sometimes safer if people can't see what you've got - I am thinking of people who have already entered your land and so can see in. They can also more easily see if you are there.
Not a bad idea otherwise and I think we will be doing this for most of our windows since no one can see in. Two are bred to be flock guardians and will not let anyone in. So I think we've got that covered! And as sad as it sounds, on the scale of things, I don't think we've got much cool stuff people would be interested in anyway! Jo I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. I think having the openness/brightness of no window coverings will be good (maybe more for summer rather than winter). Maybe you could have the trendy new roller blinds...we'll be getting these for the sliding doors in the alfresco, but i think it could be easily used through out the whole house Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Re: No window coverings? 25Jul 22, 2008 8:22 pm I am also getting the trendy new roller blinds throughout my new home, I want the dual ones with a blockout feature too.
I think they look great - so clean and simple. I might get some plantation shutters in the bathrooms only, but will have to see My karma ran over your dogma Re: No window coverings? 26Jul 22, 2008 8:39 pm If I can just beat my energy efficiency drum once more , the way those blinds are installed with the roll being hidden by the blind is quite inefficient for insulating, so unless that is a look that you simply must have then make sure they install them the other way around. That way there is less of a gap between the window and the blind and air cannot circulate as easily.
Off soap box once more 'chelle We have a hand-over date...15/10...but I won't hold my breath! http://people-in-glass-houses.blogspot.com/ Re: No window coverings? 28Jul 22, 2008 9:45 pm 'chelle said (from her soapboax of course )

How much extra does it cost - well something like this. If your home has 70m2 of windows and SINGLE glazed doors with aluminium frames with clear glass, on a winter’s night when it’s 15 degrees colder outside, the heat loss would be about: 6,510 watts. That’s equivalent to the total heat output of a large gas heater or a 2hp air conditioner running at full capacity. (Just becaseu you don;t want curtains. You roughly save somewhere like 35% to 50% the U-value of the window by selecting double glazing, so at best about 3000 watts of heat loss in this example – equivalent to the energy use of fifty 60 watt incandescent light bulbs. Put curtains up and as chelle said and it gets better - good curtains are said to cut this back by about another 25% so it get back to something like 2000 wats needed with double glazing and curtins installed. So in rough figures - energy required IN WINTER to HEAT the house in this example. 6000 watts required if single glazed no curtains 3000 watts with good double glazing 2000 watts with double glazing and good curtains As for neighbours looking in - as a friend of mine said - let them - they'll be the ones who will enjoy it Steve Re: No window coverings? 30Jul 22, 2008 10:07 pm Ash, do you ever feel really lonely and that you're on your own and no-one sees your point of view?
Do you sweetie? You do? That's cos you ARE really lonely and on your own and no-one sees your point of view!!!!!! No velvet swags, tails or tassles! READ MY LIPS!!!! Jo I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. Terrence Malick Re: No window coverings? 33Jul 22, 2008 11:51 pm Hmm we're on a bush block, lots of tall skinny type windows on the house that is yet to be built. I'm not sure what I'll do about curtains, certainly not needed for privacy unless people actually come to our place. I reckon we will end up with something purely to keep some heat in, in the winter. But of course we'll wait till the house is built and see how the finances are then, if we have to wait a while at least we can, and take our time to find the right look.
I guess it's easy to forget that you can actually have your curtains / blinds / venetians open rather than shut all the time. Re: No window coverings? 34Jul 23, 2008 8:21 am joles Think the decision is made! But would still like to hear more opinions, both aesthetic and practical. Hi Jo, Personally I would have window coverings for purely aesthetic reasons. I dont like the look of big dark window panes at night...dosent feel right to me. At night I like to put on the heater, close the blinds and snuggle into the couch, a nice cosy feeling I suppose. Even if you had tightly fitted see through blinds that rolled up during the day but a night they could just take the edge of the darkness outside. Anyway, thats me I actually love window furnishings as it completes a room and frames the window...all IMHO of course Mrs B ps...my BIL lives in a city penthouse aprtment where the night views of the city are spectacular ....definately no blinds needed as the outside is lit very brightly and the view is like a giant picture feature. Hi there I'm looking for a independent company for a expert report on my blinds ,sheers & plantation shutters I'm in Melbourne 0 9225 that will depend on the kitchen bench depth. you'll have to specify it so it allows for both the tap and the sink 1 7394 |
