Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Jan 06, 2016 11:44 am I recently spoke to a roof truss supplier and he told me that the trend is to 600 crs as opposed to the old "normal" 900 crs. He suggested that the only reason for the trend is that it makes the roof installation safer because there is less chance of falling through! When I replied that this added safety comes at about 30% extra cost he said "not really, because the load on each truss is less and so the member sizes are less", and thus, the overall cost is not much different. So, my questions are.... 1. does any regulation state the centre distance? 2. what is considered normal out in the real world? 3. Any other comments on the above? thanks. Re: Roof Truss Centres??? 2Jan 06, 2016 12:24 pm I've never been involved in a job where the trusses were set out at more than 600mm crs although I have seen quite a few as you say at 900mm crs - mostly for project homes with metal sheet roofs. Probably 40% of ours were for tiled roofs is maybe why. The only thing that determines the spacings is the software the truss companies use or their on-call structural engineer. Or unless the architect or designer has called up the smaller size for a reason. Some Salesman/designers don't know what they were doing 2. Some Manufacturers talk nonsense 3. most Builders aren't interested in saving you money..go figure 4. Australian Housing costs are among the highest in the world Because of all the above they ask questions on this website in order to make informed decisions..good for them BTW, They are also trending towards a more all inclusive service that includes design/engineering/construction upfront and IMO they will save heaps Designer,Engineer (Civil,Const & Envir),Builder,Concrete & Masonry Contract.Struct Repairs Re: Roof Truss Centres??? 6Jan 07, 2016 3:13 pm Quote: design/engineering/construction upfront Good luck with getting a builder to do all that for nix. They'll hit you up for a hefty deposit first. Then when you walk away from them for reason xyz you'll have to go through the process again with another builder and another hefty deposit. Stewie Re: Roof Truss Centres??? 7Jan 08, 2016 8:43 am No one should work for free and if builders are having problems getting money for paperwork from the punters then that's their problem (OT that is yet another story).LOL,I can assure the punters that engineers don't work for free nor do they charge $600 admin fees for minor changes post preparation of plans Agreement (PPA) etc, etc. Designer,Engineer (Civil,Const & Envir),Builder,Concrete & Masonry Contract.Struct Repairs Re: Roof Truss Centres??? 8Jan 08, 2016 10:19 am Quote: No one should work for free... That's what you are asking the builders to do. That's why they ask for a deposit. Pretty simple. It weeds out the tyre kickers from the genuinely interested people.
