Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Dec 25, 2015 8:05 pm Hi Guys… Im looking to timber cladding to the 1st level of our house… I have been looking at products for the past few weeks now and am looking at either spotted gum or Ironbark. We have a timber deck which is Merbau, I can't find timber cladding products which are Merbau. My question is If I just buy Merbau timber which they use for decks could I use that for cladding? I understand there wouldn't be a tongue and groove system, but do I really need that? all timber will be screwed into battens. All opinions and advice appreciated….. Re: Timber Cladding... 2Dec 26, 2015 6:48 am To protect the timber frame of your second storey you really need sarking stapled to the frame then some sort of interlocking cladding that protects it all from the weather. T & G is not a good idea as it doesn't allow the water to escape. Most of the weatherboard styles ( timber and fibre/cement lookalikes ) have a clip together groove but with a higher back so the water can drain away. Using timber on the outside as you suggest is possible ( with modifications of course ) but don't think that it will last very long looking good. With our harsh Australian sun the UV breaks down the outside surface very quickly and your timber will turn a greyish colour within a few years even using the best clear coatings possible. If that is the look you are after then that is fine. I just thought I'd point it out. Stewie Engineering timber is certainly a less fuss option, times cheaper to supply and install and better withstands humidity. 1 15887 Standard uninsulated double brick has an R value of around 0.7.
