Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Dec 12, 2015 11:42 pm Hey guys, 14 weeks into my build and I finally have a slab! It's a huge slab. About 30 piers of 4m depth, fully suspended raft slab, and on one side the slab has a drop edge of 1m. Went to go check it today and noticed around the front porch, there seems to be a part where the slab pour has gone under the formwork and sort of seeped out and created a massive blob of concrete. Was just wondering where the slab tends to burst and bulge when poured, will the builder cut off the 'offcuts' when finishing the slab? Also noticed this on the lower edge brick seat on the drop edge beam, it's sort of spilled everywhere and created a shell of concrete over the ground. They had piers. Can't believe how simple they do them. Put slab in over the weekend - pouring rain. It was waffle pod. I always thought you packed the earth under the slab - isn't this the way anymore ? They just cut this one - laid some road mix (?) type material then formwork and cement. TSH - when did the 14 weeks start - ie contract time ? Re: Slab poured - burst/spill? 3Dec 14, 2015 11:40 am the 14 weeks started as soon as I paid my 5% - we had serious issues with engineering and slope stability so there were big delays. Apparently the rain pitting on the slab isnt an issue as itll all be covered anyway - except for the garage, which will probably need a sanding back and it feels like orange peel now. I don't have waffle pods, my slab is stiffened suspended raft slab. Re: Slab poured - burst/spill? 4Dec 14, 2015 10:32 pm Where the excess concrete has spilled out, the builder should carefully jackhammer it away from the main slab. Some guys will say they'll just hit it with a sledge hammer but there is a danger of breaking away concrete from under the slab exposing reo if you do this which should be avoided. Stewie Re: Slab poured - burst/spill? 5Dec 15, 2015 11:24 am I think a smarter operator would see the spill/burst occurring at the time, and have one of their boys ready to chip it up as it starts to go off.... even if they leave a lump, it has been separated from the slab itself. Sometimes pays to be there whilst your slab is being poured so you can pipe up and say something about these lumps squirting out. Most tradies don't mind you pointing these things out if you are polite, and say that you want to plant a shrub in that location or something. Owner Building at Jimboomba Woods in Logan City Qld. Re: Slab poured - burst/spill? 6Dec 15, 2015 1:46 pm bpratt, a smarter operator would have just shovelled some dirt back along the bottom of the formwork as backfill to stop it happening in the first place. Something we used to do all the time. So two options: - hey d*ckhead - you've f***ed up there ! OR - excuse me - is that OK over there ? Re: Slab poured - burst/spill? 8Dec 15, 2015 6:41 pm Well they cleaned it up yesterday somewhat and took off the excess the had spilled and cut off the blobs of concrete, and re-levelled the ground around it too. Retaining wall was installed too, now I'm just waiting for the frame which I hope goes in before Christmas break (Dec 22)! Still have all the drainage to do (wet charge system) and the line is now in from the water meter to the slab (water meter is about 5m higher than the slab itself). Wondering what will come first? I also found a yellow tube near where the electricity was placed in the ground - is this the gas line? Something we used to do all the time. Well that's true, I was trying to be polite in a way. But yes, a good operator would already see where it might spill through, and backfill that area before it gets poured. Owner Building at Jimboomba Woods in Logan City Qld. I was about to build my Alfresco and needed a new slab and remove exisiting slab as its not standard. So they start to excavate and jackhammer… 0 2665 Hi all, Trying to workout the minimum stepdown required between slab for my house and the outdoor alfresco area. Garage is 100mm lower than rest of the house and plan was… 0 3663 Thanks for the insights, that makes perfect sense, and yeah, I will be leaning on the experience of the excavator operator entirely. 6 11072 |
