Browse Forums General Discussion Re: Are bedroom sizes important? 61Jul 19, 2008 7:52 pm On the bed debate, our oldest son (14) will be getting a queen-sized bed once the new house is built. He is nearing 6', and I refuse to buy a king single bed and have to buy all new bedding for that size. We have enough queen-size sheets, so queen-size it will be.

Yes, but if its cold and draughty, they might find a way to keep warm..... Ok boys downstairs in the theatre room - girls upstairs in the games room... Re: Are bedroom sizes important? 64Jul 19, 2008 10:25 pm Casa2 You can buy single beds that are as long as a queen size bed. True Casa. Sometimes the problem can be getting the linen. King single stuff doesn't ever seem to be on sale either. Jo I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. No, no, of course not, teenagers would never think of such a thing. I'm sure their thoughts are all pure and platonic. http://i272.photobucket.com/albums/jj187/nurselovescoffee/ispc069054.jpg Yeah right, Joles I may be old-fashioned but I'm not that naive!! Well helyn, you have lived throught the teenage years, you should be an expert - we will all be coming to you for advise! Paula Re: Are bedroom sizes important? 66Jul 20, 2008 4:11 pm I grew up in a 3.8m x 3.0m bedroom and the extra space was so useful. Allowed plenty of room for a desk, decent size tv etc.
I think a good reasonable size for smaller bedrooms is about 3.6m x 3.0m, enough room for a bed and desk. It's a bit ridiculously seeing 35 square lowset designs with only 3.0m x 3.0m bedrooms. Where did the 35 squares disappear? Re: Are bedroom sizes important? 67Jul 20, 2008 4:13 pm HomeReview It's a bit ridiculously seeing 35 square lowset designs with only 3.0m x 3.0m bedrooms. Quote: What were your requirements when looking and did it influence the choice of house? In answer to that on Joles - definiately. I hate those small pokey little rooms that some builders theses days consider to be a bedroom. My smallest "bedroom"is a 3.5x3.5 room, with a door in the middle of the wal - So not the best use of space, but wil make a good study with an overhead bed design. And the main bedroom is 6 x 4 with a walk in robe and the other end of the house is a 4 x 4 metre bedroom room. So all are nice sized rooms with room to swing that proverbial cat And the upstsairs room - is currently 16 metres x 4 - but I'll use a screeen to divide it into - living spaces and make a bedroom os 4 x 4 proportions or a touch bigger. Steve Re: Are bedroom sizes important? 69Jul 20, 2008 6:42 pm Sharee We have small bedrooms as well (3.7 X 3.4 for ours and 3x3 for the rest ) it was purely economical on our part. We didn't want a big mortgage and so could only afford a piece of land so big so we sacraficed the size of the kids bedrooms for larger living areas. If you ask me bigger kids rooms just leads to bigger mess!! Seriously though, you get what you can, if you can only have smaller bedrooms it isn't a big deal, tvs can be wall mounted and there are space saving fold out desks around.. Hey shows how much I know, just had a look at our plans and our bedroom is actually 4.5x3.6 woohooo!! Re: Are bedroom sizes important? 70Jul 20, 2008 6:57 pm It sounds like my kids are going to end up being the shortest people alive. My 10yr old is only 116cm so single beds will definately be all they need. No tv/computers etc in their rooms either.
Just wondering what everybody calls small/medium/large rooms? As times and house designs change, what was once considered as an average size room (from when I was a teen) would now be considered large. Our main bedroom is 6950x3870, our minor rooms are 3600x2800 (two of )and 2800 x 3940 not including WIR's and/or ensuite. I think the minor bedrooms are considered average? Re: Are bedroom sizes important? 71Jul 20, 2008 7:11 pm monkeyupatree Just wondering what everybody calls small/medium/large rooms? This is my interpretation of this, and I am going by what I've seen in display homes. Everyone will have a different interpretation though. This applies to minor bedrooms: Anything under 10m2 (3m x 3.3m or equivalent) I would consider small. Between 10m2 and 12m2 (3m x 4m or equivalent) I would consider medium. Anything over 12m2 I would consider large. Again this is just my opinion and the measurements I went with in my decisions. (Our three minor bedrooms are between 11m2 and 11.5m2. As small as we could go) Jo I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. Terrence Malick Re: Are bedroom sizes important? 72Jul 20, 2008 8:52 pm Quote: Our main bedroom is 6950x3870 That's a very large bedroom!!! I thought our bedroom was a decent size, but that's same width as ours and nearly 3m longer. Quote: As times and house designs change, what was once considered as an average size room (from when I was a teen) would now be considered large. Are you saying bedroom sizes have gotten smaller over the years? Certainly old houses from the 50's etc had large bedrooms compared to now, often the 1st and 2nd bedroom were the same size with perhaps a smaller sleepout type at the back. However larger families were the norm, in 3 bedroom houses, and usually 2 children shared a room. I shared a room with my sister until I was 16 and DH shared a room with his 2 brothers, a bunk bed and single bed in the room, 6 children in a fairly small Railways Dept house. Kids today don't know how lucky they are... Off your soap box, Granny Anyway, I agree with Joles' measurements, as a rough rule of thumb by todays standards. Our minor bedrooms are both 2.8 x 4m, a total of 11.2 m, compared to house displays I have looked at, they seem mid-range in size. Kids today don't know how lucky they are... quote] Parents don't know how lucky they are either. My son and daughter shared a room at my Mum's while our house was being built and nearly drove me bananas with their bickering By the time we moved I was considering separate houses for them rather than separate rooms Re: Are bedroom sizes important? 74Jul 20, 2008 9:48 pm In our 41 square home we will be having;
-Master bed 4.6 x 6.2m -Bed 2 3.2 x 3.8m -Bed 3 3.5 x 3.2m -Bed 4 3.4 x 3.1m We are making a 5th bedroom which will basically be the same size as bedroom 4 but slightly longer... For me these rooms are plenty big enough for a double bed, bedside table and small desk/set-up. All have built in robes and one has a WIR. There is 3 living areas for them to watch TV, one study and one 'games room' with a pool table etc. They will also have a decent backyard with pool, trampoline etc.. I'm pretty happy with this set-up My karma ran over your dogma Re: Are bedroom sizes important? 76Jan 24, 2010 11:21 pm I went to a few Display Homes today and was pretty shocked to find that medium-large homes have such small bedrooms! I guess like someone said earlier in this thread, some of the space goes into the Main Bedroom which is overly big! Anyways I was wanting to compare my bedrooms and this thread was very informative. Mine are: Main: 4.3 x 4 plus wir/ensuite Bed 1: 3.3 x 3.3 plus built in Bed 2: 3.8 x 3.3 plus built in Bed 3/Study: 3 x 3.3 (no built in, using as study, prob wayyyy to small for 4th bedroom) Keeping in mind it is a Duplex I am happy with the sizes but would not see the point in having a 40plus house with some of these sized rooms as above which I saw today DA approved Waiting on a few more Builder's quotes. Re: Are bedroom sizes important? 78Jan 25, 2010 8:24 am I'm a single woman (hence single income), who is about to build in the outer North after spending 12 years developing a social life based around the CBD. My requirements when I was looking for a house nearly drove me insane - there were just so few houses that would cater to my needs. 1) At least 3 bedrooms that could take a queen sized bed and assorted bedroom furniture - one for me, one for a housemate and one to be used as a guest room. The plan has always been to bring in a housemate to help pay of the mortgage faster and give me a bit of room to actually have a life in the next 30 years. I can't expect an adult to live in a room only large enough for a single bed. As for the guest room -this needs to be large enough to fit a queen bed as most of the people I know are couples. Re: Are bedroom sizes important? 79Jan 25, 2010 8:50 am mandystoj Btw does anyone have an idea if a King Size bed will look 'decent' in a 4.3x4 bedroom? Our main bedroom is 4.5m by 4.5m. We have a king size bed, two oversized bedside tables plus an almost 2m long dresser. The room is huge with plenty of room to walk around all the furniture. Plus at present we have a cradle at the foot of our bed and there is still plenty of room. Some things are worth waiting for.
