Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Nov 18, 2015 10:59 pm Hi, if you have standard pitched (22deg?) Roof with 600mm eaves, how high can you install the windows? I.E. minimum distance from ceiling? Would it be appropriately 300mm from the ceiling? I have to figure out how high to make my bi fold doors. Re: 600mm eaves / window height 2Nov 18, 2015 11:17 pm Hi JB1 1. It depends are your eaves boxed, lined, exposed 2. What sort of lintels are you using? 3. What are your ceiling heights 4. What is your wall construction, Double Brick, Brick Veneer, Composite, etc 5. I'm still at the design stage and we're doing elevations at the moment so no engineering drawings. 1. It depends are your eaves boxed, lined, exposed. Lined with cement sheeting, however would like to have it lined with decking timber if cost wasn't an issue. 2. What sort of lintels are you using? Most likely timber along the outer perimeter as the upper floor is smaller than the ground floor, however for the 5500mm long bi fold, so I'm not sure if the engineer will specify steel or timber/LVL. 3. What are your ceiling heights. 3000mm 4. What is your wall construction, Double Brick, Brick Veneer, Composite, etc,. Standard Pine Stud Brick Veneer. My architect is pushing for 2400 window heights overall, however I want to push it slightly higher, maybe 2600-2700. I'm not sure if 2700mm is feasible with 600mm eaves. Otherwise, i will have to make the bifold doors at 2550mm-2600mm. However I would prefer my bi folds to be 2700mm high. And then to match the bi fold, ideally have the other windows at the same height, but I suppose if the bi folds were 2700-2600mm high, it doesn't matter if the other windows are at 2400mm as it's still a good height. It may be a good idea to measure the actual house before I order the bi folds as the windows open outwards. Re: 600mm eaves / window height 6Nov 19, 2015 9:49 pm As long as you also allow for the lintels over large openings. Smaller windows like 1200mm wide you might need a lintel 200mm high. A 5m opening for a set of bi-fold doors and you would obviously need a lintel much deeper to carry the roof load. Stewie Re: 600mm eaves / window height 7Nov 20, 2015 5:11 pm It will most likely be a T or H steel lintel 200mm. Engineers love steel lintels. I'll ask if the engineer can specify a 300mm lvl. It will make installing the bi folds (and possible motorised blinds) easier as the top of the door frame needs support. Versaloc is a mortarless besser block system that still needs a properly engineered footing. If you just do a 400x200 footing it will fail in time. Couldn't find the trimmer - not sure if there isn't one simply because the eave is so narrow. Went ahead with the spring toggles and it all worked out… 7 5837 |
