We have a lowset queenslander in inner-north suburbs of Brisbane... ex housing commission.
The house has an external laundry that we're removing to make way for a deck.
In removing the laundry ceiling panels, shows a black carpet/underlay looking thing that the roof tiles sit on.
Does anyone know what this stuff is and what it's made of? It is safe to remove? I guess I'm really wondering if it's likely to have asbestos in it.

From what I can piece together, the laundry (and therefore the laundry roof) has likely always been in this spot since the house was built in 1951. The ceiling panels I've removed already and external walls look like they were added in April 1996 (going by a scribble on the wall behind a panel I removed) to "close in" the laundry. My guess is prior to this is wasn't really closed in, but has semi-open timber slat "walls".
Any guidance or help would be very appreciated.
Thanks
Tim
