Brick Workmanship. 4Nov 10, 2015 5:54 am Agreed. You can request they relay them , or render them . Your joints are shocking . Brick laying a joke, brick cleaning a joke If you joints are crumbling I would be worried the brickie used too weak a mix. Defiantly request they be relayed, you don't have to accept this . Re: Brick Workmanship. 5Nov 10, 2015 11:28 am Also mate , as the rain or retic hits those joints, they will get worse overtime . Your well within your rights to request for them to be re layed. Or you could asked to be compensated .. It would be cheaper for the builder to compensate you, then you seal bricks and render house. Brick Workmanship. 6Nov 10, 2015 11:29 am Mel sydney This is normal untill they washed all bricks. It seems they have not done clean up properly. Look at joints on window sill ... That's shocking work. Also the joints crumbling off isn't normal The brick cleaning can be easily fixed. That's the least of his worries. Although it may look like the Brickcleaner tried to pressure clean those bricks and destroyed the face of them . Those bricks shouldn't be pressure cleaned. Re: Brick Workmanship. 7Nov 10, 2015 6:12 pm I checked out the Boral website & downloaded their brochure for your bricks. The photos in the brochure showed perfectly rectangular bricks. Your bricks are way out of tolerance. This is not the fault of the bricklayer but the brick manufacturer. Your builder needs to get the brick manufacturer involved in resolving this issue. Last image was loaded last time. Looks like serious issue. builder needs to involve brick manufacturer. I agree, most of the issues you mention are to do with the bricks themselves and those mortar joints look like the brickies were trying to compensate for irregular shaped bricks so your builder will likely have to work with the brick company on this. Re: Brick Workmanship. 10Nov 14, 2015 1:10 am Beetaloo Your bricks are way out of tolerance. This is not the fault of the bricklayer but the brick manufacturer. Nah, its the bricklayers fault. Assuming more than just a few were out of tolerance, he should have picked this up when they were on the pallets before laying them and chosen not to lay them. Seems to be the usual lack of professionalism that is so endemic amongst tradies to day. Re: Brick Workmanship. 11Nov 14, 2015 6:30 am OK, what ever you do, do not render. I repeat do not render. That would be a travesty of a beautiful brick. Besides that you have just paid $2/brick about double a standard brick. The inconsistency in texture? I am guessing here you might be referring to some being a little shinier and smoother then others. If the is the case, that is the brick and is one of the big reasons I choose this brick. It will give a flat wall life with this inconsistency. Love it. My biggest gripe with Boral over this brick is a few years ago they started making them more consistent. This is a personal preference of cause. Now the inconsistency with mortar is the brick laying. The chipped bricks are the brick layer. I think in these images we are looking at efflorescence, salt leaching out of the brick after being washed or rain. This will happen for while particularly with this brick, this just need washed again ...and maybe again. Inconsistent lengths of brick I am surprised this would be greater the a few mm. Back to the inconsistent texture, this can be result of harsh cleaning. I did have this on one project (inner west also as it happens), I didn't mind so much as I was looking for these qualities as I mentioned. Brickies do need to check the manufacturers notes on these as the are a little different to your standard brick. Speak with the manufacturer yourself if there is a real problem they will often com and inspect it for you. They are faced with these questions all the time. Standard bricks about $1.3 each so you're right that they're twice as expensive. Re: Brick Workmanship. 13Nov 14, 2015 2:15 pm It's hard to tell without seeing the pictures in a complete context, however in the second photo those bricks would appear to have been cut to fit, they are not full size bricks. It's like they have started laying from each side and just cut a brick where they have met in the middle. This has resulted in the irregular brick shape. That is just poor brick laying. Face brick needs to be set out carefully to prevent this sort of issue. I am not loosing my mind I had a meeting with the builder onsite and he was lost for words . We have marked out all the issues and will wait for the bricky to come back and fix them. I will keep you update when it happens. Cheers G Re: Brick Workmanship. 17Dec 12, 2015 11:09 am Update.. Brickie has come out and has fixed some of issue, missed some issue and has created a lot more issues. The most obvious issue is he has used the wrong colour mortar, instead of using off-white mortar I now have grey mortar. I am waiting on the builder to get back to me but I don't think I will get a satisfactory outcome.... More updates coming soon.. No it's not efflorescence and it'll only make it worse if they are washed with hydrochloric again. It's calcium staining otherwise known as white staining. Some more info is here...[See page 14] http://thinkbrick.blob.core.windows.net/media/1409/manual-13-clay-masonry-cleaning-manual.pdf In most cases a failure to pre-wet the brickwork is the main cause of the problem as the dissolved mortar after the application of hydrochloric acid [HCl] was allowed to dry bach into the wall. That is why the white streaks are vertical, because it was running down the wall as it dried into the brickwork. http://www.pghbricks.com.au/~/media/pgh ... rsion.ashx dkidston Inconsistent lengths of brick I am surprised this would be greater the a few mm. The cuts do not look vertical and they are not cut to the correct size. I imagine they were probably cut with an angle grinder. Good luck Being a builder is more than just having once held a hammer.
