Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Oct 20, 2015 11:58 am Hi! We are currently doing our house and we plan to have square set ceilings throughout. Does anyone here know how much it cost? My OH is sure that it will be dearer than having cornices (ie will take longer, if the floor and wall are out then it might be more fiddly to do it etc) but we just cannot find a lot of information on the net. Have you done square set at your place? Can you please post photos if you have or are currently doing it? Thanks! Years ago, my father did square set in an extension he was lining himself. He did that to save money buying cornice, and wasn't worried about it looking neat. It's a bit rough in the finish, but has lasted fine and done the job. I think square-set gives a bit more of a commercial look, which fits in with the current fashions. A compromise may be just to do it in the living areas, as it's not unusual for bedrooms areas to have a more domestic look. Yeah, we actually thought of just doing it in the living areas at first. We may still do, depending on how much it is gonna cost us. But for now, we plan to do the entire house. One reason why we are doing this is to give the illusion of height. I wanted a 3m ceiling in our house but it meant we will have gyprock cuts that will go to waste plus cooling/heating would be more expensive as it would require more to heat/cool the house - among other things. In the end, we went with 2.7m ceiling height. I want square set ceilings to make the house look/feel higher than it actually is. We now have a bit more of an idea how much more it will cost us to do this. Do you mind posting photos of how your ceiling looks like? (if you are doing or have done it). Cheers! And which state are you in also? I am from SA. Just to note, as there might be difference in price depending on which state you are building. We'll see. Owner Builders in boot-shaped Yorke Peninsula : viewtopic.php?f=38&t=80264& Re: Square set ceiling 11Oct 23, 2015 8:40 am We've done square set all through our house. I don't know how much it would cost compared to cornice, but our plasterer said that it is more expensive as it is much more labour intensive. We were never going to have cornice anyway so we didn't ask how much different the price would be. The only thing better than square set, is shadow-line bead in my opinion. That is even more expensive though... maybe next time we will do shadow line Building Services Engineer Renovating our 1960's modernist home in Brisbane https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=53&t=82091 Square set ceiling 12Oct 23, 2015 9:29 am Shadowline is having a gap between the wall and ceiling isn't it? Well, that's what my partner thinks it is anyway. He reckons he doesn't want to do that. So we will do square set. Partner said it will depend on our floor and walls being lined up. It is easy to see the imperfection if the walls and floors are out. If it will look ghastly, we might need to change to a different one. He thinks our slab and wall frames look good but you never know until you get to it. Would you mind posting photos of your ceiling? Haha. I love photos. For it to look ghastly, it would have to be out significantly enough not to be in tolerance and would need to be fixed. Re: Square set ceiling 14Oct 23, 2015 11:05 am If the walls and or ceiling frames are out in any way square set will look worse than those same walls done in shadowline. The small recess of the P50 mould allows a bit more leeway. Stewie Re: Square set ceiling 15Oct 23, 2015 5:02 pm Our house is 50 years old, with all the movement and imperfections that happen on a stump house over 5 decades. The square set looks fine even in our place, and I know that some of the walls are wonky. On a new home there is no excuse for it to be that far out that it is noticeable, unless your carpenters and plasterers are drunk all day. As Stewie said, shadowline will hide most sins. I think it looks fantastic. It gives the impression that the ceiling is floating and gives a nice sharp edge where the two planes meet. If i had the money and were building a new house I would have shadowline everywhere. It has square set ceilings that still look fine. (the ceilings were installed before the roof went on so they overlap the walls - however you can't do this any more) However on my new build I used cornices as I was not confident I could build to the necessary tolerances. I saw this on a house about a year ago where they had also done this with the skirting so the shadowline was continuous. I think its definately worth it. It has cleaner lines! And is it possible to disconnect the duct joined to the vent from inside the house, without going into the roof cavity? 0 5943 |
