Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Oct 16, 2015 12:55 pm Hi, Just wondering if anyone here has raked ceilings, how common are they ? and any pics if anyone has raked ceilings please,thank-you.Could you also add the height of the peak and can you give me a rough estimate pricewise on how much they are compared to lets day 31 c ceiings. Re: Raked ceilings, anyone ?? 3Oct 16, 2015 6:24 pm I have 3 houses and they all have raked ceilings because I like them. Not everyone does and raked ceilings to not suit all building styles. Raked ceilings do add cost and complexity to a build. Re: Raked ceilings, anyone ?? 4Oct 17, 2015 12:45 am Beazley77 yes they are very nice indeed. How high is the peak in your raked ceiling Beetaloo ? my friend has a raked ceiling ,they are renting though, the owner is always around the place tending to the garden. One day she asked him ow high the peak was in her ceiling and he said 6 meters. That seems pretty high ! definitely looks nice though. The home look's alot more spacious and open as well. When you say it doesn't suit all building styles. You seem to have some experience with raked ceilings, what kind doesn't it suit ? Re: Raked ceilings, anyone ?? 5Oct 17, 2015 7:11 pm My house in the city has raked ceilings that are 4.6m high but I built this house when I was young and fit and had no fear on heights. The house I am building now has ceilings that are only 3.4m at the apex as that is as high as I can reach on my mini scaffolding. I reduced the ceiling height by reducing the ceiling pitch down to 8 degrees and used a sheet metal roof. For raked ceiling to be cost effective the house floor plan and roof plan should be rectangular or based on a series on rectangles (a hip roof will not work). The end walls of the house should be gable type walls. For a house with a complex floor or roof plan, a flat high ceiling (say 3 metres) may be more cost effective. Interest can be added to a flat ceiling by introducing some drop bulkheads in strategic locations. Re: Raked ceilings, anyone ?? 6Oct 18, 2015 12:02 am We have 2 different rakes. Re: Raked ceilings, anyone ?? 10Oct 18, 2015 9:53 am Comes down to personal choice and what you like I suspect. For us it suited our style of house and roofline, I didn't want the rake through the kitchen mainly for ease of cleaning in what is a functional space. You need to think of how you'll use the home and the environment you're building in. We're in northern nsw so wanted air circulation so using the raked roof allows hot air out of the high louvres in summer and we can close them for warmth in winter, also allows light in this part of the house. Certainly creates a beautiful open space. Good luck deciding! Normal ceiling height is 2700 and at its highest point it is 3600. Don't know the cost as it was a custom build and was included all along. We chose not to rake the kitchen so not to complicate the kitchen cupboards My build thread: Custom build on 40 acres viewtopic.php?f=31&t=75656 Re: Raked ceilings, anyone ?? 12Oct 19, 2015 10:46 pm Beautiful MnT !! i like the hanging lights youve chosen. It lok like you have managed to decorate the space nicely too.Is this one big room ?whats the size ? do you have another lounge area or this is the lounge, family, meals all in the one big open room ?thats one thing i was unsure about on my plan.I thought it might be difficult decorating one big large room.I have the option of having games and theater room as 2 separate rooms or combine and make one big room? i chose to make one big room, but am still not 100 percent convinced i am just thinking about the area being odd to style, any opinion or inspiration ? Re: Raked ceilings, anyone ?? 13Oct 20, 2015 8:12 am Yes it's one big room (8500 x 5680) with the kitchen off to the side (5860 x 2800). I thought it was easy to fill the space as it's essentially two rooms in one (living & dining room) so there is plenty of furniture to fill the space. We also have a second room (3600 x 4300) which has a smaller lounge & TV in it which is used when we don't want to watch the same thing on TV (saved our marriage during football season ) I probably would have made the games & theatre room one big room too but as long as you don't need the two uses at the same time. Not sure if you were thinking of having the raked ceiling in the games/theatre room but I feel it would be a waste to have such a statement in a secondary room. Also if you are serious about the theatre part the acoustics may be an issue as the raked ceiling does make the room a little echoey depending on your furnishings & how much glass you have. Yes I was planning for that whole end to be raked , kitchen, meals and the combined big room! Other side of the house not raked.thanks so much for the reply. Re: Raked ceilings, anyone ?? 15Oct 20, 2015 10:03 am No what I meant is that the raked ceiling might be a waste of a statement if it was only in a secondary room as you won't be using it as much as as your living areas. My build thread: Custom build on 40 acres viewtopic.php?f=31&t=75656 Thanks mate. Yeah good points!
