I would definitely go for one, or two, if I build again. (see http://www.anewhouse.com.au/2015/09/power-tower/) A lot depends on what you use the bench for. If it's for cooking, like chopping vegetables or rolling something in flour, a hole in the bench top is not a good thing, even a very small one. I once made a bench top of small tiles. It was not practical, the joints got dirty and I had to clean it a lot more, than if it was a complete flat surface. In case you use that bench only for having a light snack and you don't have young kids around, than it might be a good idea.
