Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Sep 08, 2015 6:38 pm Hi all This is my first post but have been browsing for awhile. This forum is a fantastic resource and i an very happy to have found it. I have a few questions that i would like to get advice on. Overall i am considering changing professions and realize this will need to be a staged approach, as i could not afford a drop in salary to work as an apprentice etc. I work as a project manager in the banking industry but the family business is property development (overseas) and so i grew up on building sites. Not qualified in anything just capable of different building skills. To this end i am interested in comments about how i might transition to property development/refurbishment. For example should i consider doing my CERT III in building? Even if i got it i guess my big hurdle is still getting the experience to get a building license? We will be looking for a house next year and i would like to do as much renovation myself as is possible with a day job. So i thought i could get my Owner builder certificate? Is this worth it? Does it allow you to sign off much of the work? Other ideas i have considered to help support the initial house renovation are... getting a waterproofing certificate so i can then complete more of the wetarea renos myself, as i have built a number of bathrooms - would this be worthwhile? Learning a cad drawing program with integrated building cost calculator so i can cost renovations more accurately. I have seen a number of these but they seem tailored to US market. Any Oz based versions? As you can see i am happy to put in the hard yards to up my skillset but would just like some direction, perhaps from others who have walked a similar path, on how to get bang for buck. thanks Re: Upping skills and possibly changing professions 2Sep 12, 2015 5:50 am Sorry, I can't provide any guidance on industry specifics but I hope someone gives you some feedback soon. You have a great attitude and I reckon if you put your mind to it, will do whatever you want to do Re: Upping skills and possibly changing professions 5Sep 14, 2015 8:13 am thanks for the support. i am going to have a play with one of the chief architect programs as a start.
