Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Sep 07, 2015 12:43 pm After other people's thoughts. We are currently part way through owner building our house and have realised that we have an area that is wasted space at the top of the stairs. Since it is still able to be easily changed at the moment i'm looking at our options. Uploading top floor of our plans and photos to get opinions on what you would do? The first plan/ photos is how it is at the moment. The area under question is between the stair void and and bed 1 wall over to the ensuite WC. This next plan is what we are thinking to do with it. It involves making en extra WIR for Bed 1 next to the WC with access from the bedroom. It would come out as far as the first window on the west side. It would measure about 1.4 x 1.6. A study nook area is going behind Bed 2 already so i'm thinking bring a nib wall out for that to line up with robe wall. Hope that makes sense! The cupboard in front of the WC will be deleted, and used for services etc, so its not so busy and because it wont be needed. Layout advice wanted. 2Sep 07, 2015 2:39 pm Without even reading your full post I was thinking make it a walk in robe. At the time of building I thought having two massive walk in robes was a waste of space. As we are about to move in, the more and more people/trades that come and walk through look at it and think it's pretty awesome. You can never have enough robe space. btw. I love your future roof tiles. Re: Wasted space. Layout advice wanted. 3Sep 07, 2015 3:08 pm I'd consider going a bit further than that. You could widen it up to bring the passage to the master down to around 1200mm. That would allow the robe to be double-loaded, getting the usage space per floor area up higher. Doing that would also improve the privacy to bed 1 a bit. You could bring it to within 1200 of the stairs, but that raises the question of what to do with the cupboard that's there. It perhaps be used as storage accessible from the ensuite. This raised the question, so you don't have any risers for A/C ducts, or a laundry chute? Now, these changes give you a robe pretty much as big as the original robe, so there are two extra alternatives you could go for. One is to instead make this one a walk-in linen, with the access off the other end. Then you could reconfigure the robes for beds 3 and 4, to make them huge, with around 8 metres of hanging / storage each. The other alternative is to turn the original master robe into a robe for bed 2. Then the sitting area could be increased in size a bit. Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Re: Wasted space. Alternatively you could add that extra WIR, where you have it, but actually have it as a walk in linen closet, with door to the hallway, so all your linen for the upstairs bedrooms can be stored up there. I am suggesting this not knowing how big your actual linen closet is, I assume it is on the ground floor near the laundry, but it could be massive anyway.... Think we will go ahead with making a second WIR for Bed 1 but slightly bigger than what I drew up. The cupboard next to the WC will go. It was only ever put there to decrease the length of the WC. It was going to house the AC ducting etc and the void it creates still will. Linen closet TashPaul is up between bed 3 and 4. It's drawn as a 4 door closet but in fact will end up 3 with ends also being used for ductwork. That's still 2 more cupboards than I have now Kavehman. Roof tiling starting today. Can't wait to see how it all looks together. Have already spoken to carpenters and no dramas to change this area round. Need to stop changing my mind!
