It's costing me a upgrade fee of $103.00 to upgrade a standard Double Power Point to one that includes USB sockets.
Does this sound right? Seems a little expensive for a simple change in points. I don't believe there is any extra wiring needed?

Re: $103 to Upgrade PP to Include USB? 6Aug 01, 2015 2:04 pm We were also going to be charged $100 or more extra, for them to supply and install power points with built-in USB. There is no extra wiring required so I asked why the inflated price. The answer was the builder and/or electrician covering themselves in for return trips to fix or replace faulty USB charges, as that has been their experience. The agreed solution was that I bought the Sockitz (about $36 each + postage) and they will install for same price as installing regular power point. The point is of course that now they are not covered by builders' warranty, so they don't have to fix it if it stops working later. Re: $103 to Upgrade PP to Include USB? 7Aug 01, 2015 3:36 pm I wouldn't count on USB staying the same. For power up to 500mA, they may be useful for a while, but there's been a lot of change with support for higher current loads, and moving forward you may be wanting the new type C connector instead of a type A. Re: $103 to Upgrade PP to Include USB? 8Aug 01, 2015 4:49 pm There is a bit more info here viewtopic.php?f=2&t=37386 in a thread about the same thing. As with anything to do with technology it dates pretty quick even though the old USB connection in various forms has been with us since about the year 2000. Even with a lot of newer devices you can almost always get an adaptor that will charge through a USB socket. USB will be around for the long haul. It's implimented into far to many products including home and car audio equipment. The size of the fitting changed on the devices (like phones and tablets) but the other end (that plugs into the charger) has stayed the same. There are some pretty nice charging mats/docks for multiple devices these days. I'd rather just plug that in in my study and be done with it.
