Browse Forums General Discussion Re: Home library / reading room??? 41Jul 06, 2008 3:02 pm There are some books I can do without…..the really badly written ones. Which go back to the second hand shop!
There are some that have truly inspired me, which will never go! Kathy Riekes??? (Not sure of spelling, to lazy to look it up )….was the one who inspired me to start writing…..her books take 1st position in my book case, and will never go. No doubt I have made room for all my books…….when I can finally get published!!!!!!!!!!! Erm, that's just the hardcovers. And the collection has been culled time and again over the years to get rid of the dross, but it goes back 40 years and includes a lot of irreplaceable first editions, non-fiction, reference books etc It's not that big a collection. I know people with over 10,000. I should perhaps say that I've worked in media/publishing all my life so it's a bit different to the average book buyer. Quote: I must pose the question: if no-one has actually looked at your books for over 5 years, do you really need to keep them??? We've been in housing limbo for 5 years, which is the only reason they're packed. Not having them all out where I can lay my hands on them has been very painful. I keep dipping into boxes at random and getting some pleasant surprises. Only a few more weeks and they can all be back in the light again. Re: Home library / reading room??? 43Jul 06, 2008 8:41 pm That,s great that there are other people out there who would like a library
I have always wanted a proper library and personally I would be very happy with a Harry Potter inspired one (We also joked to DS that his room was the one under the stairs ) We have got a formal dining room in the house that we are building, but we,re not sure if it will get used very much so if it doesn,t,then we will turn that into a library....I would just love one of those ladders that slide across the room Cheers Mel Building on 9 acres Re: Home library / reading room??? 44Jul 06, 2008 8:56 pm All my books are currently packed away in boxes too They will be the first thing I unpack when we move into the new house in Aug...
I have a little pile of 30 or so to tie me over till then... I also plan on hanging my hammoch in a nice sunny place & building a day bed on the alfreso for other places to read.... Nothing like reading in the sun.... nesspop Why am I covered in feathers Re: Home library / reading room??? 45Jul 06, 2008 9:29 pm melanie02 (We also joked to DS that his room was the one under the stairs ) We call the cupboard under the stairs The Room of Requirement - it's where I quickly hide all the mess when we have visitors! Re: Home library / reading room??? 46Jul 06, 2008 10:05 pm mudtrilogy I think a leather chesterfield with scatter cushions and a throw rug. Cosy colours, tub chairs. We are also doing this to our formal lounge, but will have a desk for the times when the kids are older and we need to use another computer. Ours will be in the formal lounge also, and I was thinking a chesterfield too. I love them they're so comfy. Michelle, great photos, tha's actually made me realise we have the perfect room and spot for a window seat It will also potentially free up more wall space for additional bookshelves designing that way too. Those of you with mediumish sized libraries (room size not volumes) do you or will you have specific/additional lighting in there? Building in manor lakes 2008 Re: Home library / reading room??? 47Jul 06, 2008 10:10 pm Ours will be a library/study/chill out space. So it will have soft overhead lighting (for chillout time) and will use floor lamps and natural light (from to the floor windows) for reading.
Downlights in the library? No, no, no ,no, no!!!!!! Beautiful, relaxing but also appropriate lighting. Nothing relaxing about downlights! I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. Sooo funny penjay! Michelle, I love the pictures you have posted. I'm liking te idea of a bay window, but the only problem is that it's not the sunniest of rooms. Would it still look ok??? Great idea about no downlights, as it can look too stark, possibly the use of softer 'traditional' globes. I might look into that, see what's out there. Gee I'm excited. Re: Home library / reading room??? 49Jul 06, 2008 11:00 pm I will post some pics of my library as soon as it's finished. I've been waiting months for all the tradesmen to show (builder, carpenter, plasterer, chimneyysweep & electrician) and bits to arrive. Looks like it's still 2-3 months off. Meanwhile my poor books wait patiently in their boxes. Do the hard jobs first. There are also those that were extremely challenging to read - Atlas Shrugged - Ayn Rand's magnum opus and one of the longest books written in English. I'd put concertina doors opening outwards to reveal the glorious floor to ceiling back wall, directly opposite/first thing you see, just all of books, books and more books...then there'd be a wondrously comfy sofa to lounge on with your books, and if you like, a mahogany computer desk with one of those lovely green and gold lamps on it... *drooling all over myself and said books* I'd also put a bay window in with a seat on it...
