We are also doing this to our formal lounge, but will have a desk for the times when the kids are older and we need to use another computer. Re: Home library / reading room??? 22Jul 05, 2008 10:06 am Justin Try this site, lots to look at : http://www.librarydesigns.com/ Still looks like Harry Potter to me... I'm going to merge the library for the kids with the upstairs games room - so they get used to the idea of books being fun, as well as having the more seirous books in the study. Re: Home library / reading room??? 23Jul 05, 2008 10:30 am Helyn Where are you going to have your main TV area? Do you have a child who will be using the other minor bedroom? And where will your computer area be? In the study with the books or elsewhere? thanks for all the great replies guys! My mind is buzzing with ideas. Our back family room will have the TV, and we aren't planning on children for another 5/6 years, so the study at the front would be empty. Our computer area will be in the back bedroom, away from the front of the house, so DH can make all the noise he wants. I love reading and have a vast collection of books, some are collectors editions and some I simply buy because of beautiful artwork and front covers! Setting a positive example/foundation for reading is vital for successful beginnings. Children are creatures of habit, what they see is what they learn. Well, that's my educational theory for the day Keep bringing on the ideas Re: Home library / reading room??? 24Jul 05, 2008 11:21 am miss81 Helyn Where are you going to have your main TV area? Well, that's my educational theory for the day Keep bringing on the ideas That is so true - we have bookshelves in nearly every room and I have read to my children since they were newborn. It's great if you want to spend a day lazing around the house and reading because you are setting a good example! Ideally I would love a library with floor to ceiling built in shelves and one of those ladder thingies that slides around the room. Sigh... maybe one day! Well, yes, of course. We must teach our children to have reading as a high priority......higher than cleaning, tidying, hanging clothes out,....... and of course repitition is the key to learning....... oh dear, yet another day reading my novel when I would much rather clean the house....but must set a good educational example Re: Home library / reading room??? 28Jul 05, 2008 6:02 pm miss81 Actually, the name of our street is one of the characters in Harry potter! Snivellus? Re: Home library / reading room??? 29Jul 05, 2008 6:05 pm We all love Harry Potter too. It is the end of an era with no new books to look forward to. If your kids (or you) are crazy about Harry Potter trivia, try the online quiz at the Scholastic website - very addictive!

We are putting in a floor to ceiling wooden book case & gas log heater.. I just need to find the right single seater chairs, ottermans , side tables & lamps.. Might even look for some old B&W city photos for the walls.. I am hoping to achieve an Oxford or Harvard look. I am also a Harry Potter nut so that look would also work... Cant wait for the day I curl up on the chair in front of the heater for the afternoon.... Our bub is due next week & already has their 6x4 bookshelf in their room with 40 or 50 books ready to go nesspop Why am I covered in feathers Re: Home library / reading room??? 32Jul 05, 2008 7:56 pm Great idea! I recommend it! I guess it will depends how much sun comes into the room. But you definitely need a space to lay, get comfy! Fall asleep! I would fill both walls on either side with shelving. In the middle of one wall I would incorporate a small desk area, with a nice chair. Along your window, have a lovely window seat; make a foam mattress for the seat with lots of big cushions. Under the window seat build in storage space. All bright and cherry colours to keep you awake while you are in there. If you’re anything like me, as soon as I pick up a book I get through 3 pages and fall asleep! I love books…….all the more the merrier in a home I say! Have fun, and enjoy your private space! Too bad the new house won't have one... Re: Home library / reading room??? 34Jul 06, 2008 12:26 am joles miss81, Someone else who wants a reading room! I am converting the formal living room in the house we are building into a study/library. I have ordered a big bookshelf that is 2m x 2m and has an attached ladder that slides across the face so that the higher shelves can be reached. On either side of the shelf will be big cosy reading chairs. One chair will sit in front of a to the floor window. The other will be in a corner with a lamp. Between the two windows will be a desk and opposite the bookshelves will be a couch. Some people want a home theatre but this was my dream room. Ever since I was a little girl I wanted a proper reading room so I can have all my books at my fingertips. To Kill A mockingbird and Wuthering Heights get a workout once a year at least and I love reading Plath and Shakespeare. Yes, I am a nerd at heart. Also it sends such a wonderful message to children about the beauty and importance of books. Much nicer message than a home theatre in my opinion. And the library of books itself can be such a family work of additions and favourites. A room like this was a must for me so that's why I went for a plan without a study. It just wouldn't have been big enough. I'm sorry I've wafffled but it's so exciting to find someone that also wants a reading room. Some people just don't understand. Jo Wow! You are a kindred spirit! I only just went back and read the whole thread - had missed your comment earlier. You have expressed yourself so eloquently. Love Wuthering Heights and To Kill a Mockingbird but Jane Eyre and Pride & Prejudice are the books I keep rereading. We don't have a dedicated reading room - I'd love one but I try to demonstrate that nearly every room in the house is a reading room (every room if you are a boy!) Pennie Re: Home library / reading room??? 35Jul 06, 2008 10:04 am This was such an interesting post to read. I loved the pictures Michelle. What a wonderful idea is to have a proper set up for library...
I am going to ask my builder for costs of in built shelves in the morning! Currenty my books are in boxes in the garage and out of sight is bit like out of mind... too hard to get too so I dont bother. I have a spare bed upstairs and the size will be 3.8 by 3.8. I am inspired to create TV room and library. Raz If you think you can, you can. When our children are older and we can free the upstairs rumpus room from toys etc we plan to move the computer etc up there so have home work station and desk for pc and I will turn the study downstairs into a reading room. I'd lock myself in there for hours on end! Michelle, I love those pictures you posted. I'd love a dark moody room though and would quite happily have one looking like something out of HP! Re: Home library / reading room??? 38Jul 06, 2008 1:12 pm Hmmm... in these days of passive video it's great to see so many people still reading but I've been a bit surprised at the low level of space people are allocating for their libraries. Books take up a lot of room! For hardcovers you'll only get about 25/26-odd books per metre.
I currently have 65 cartons of books (a bit south of 3000) that haven't seen the light of day for 5 years. Trying to work out shelving for them for the new house I recently calculated they would need around 130+ lineal metres of shelves (allowing for dividers and different sizes). Even floor to ceiling that means a much bigger room than I can afford (not to mention the cost of built-ins). I guess, like all the previous houses, they're going to end up scattered through every room. Sigh. It would be so nice to have just one real library. Re: Home library / reading room??? 39Jul 06, 2008 2:50 pm Well I like having some bookcases scattered through the house. As well as the ones that will take up a large section of the office there will be a book case in both our childrens rooms and at least1 in the main family room part of the house. I can imagine this being expanded to another 2 as well without much difficulty. Re: Home library / reading room??? 40Jul 06, 2008 2:54 pm Ancient Mariner: 3000 books???!!!
OMG !!! That is one serious book collection!! I read a lot of books but I don't tend to keep them all, only my very favourites are kept, most of the others are given away to charity shop, individuals, libraries etc. Well, some of them are library books in the first place. Likewise I keep some non-fiction books, not many, reference books date very quickly anyway and some of the best kids picture books (my kids are grown up now) For me 2 medium size bookshelves is enough, at present one is in my computer room and one in my bedroom. I must pose the question: if no-one has actually looked at your books for over 5 years, do you really need to keep them???
