I have two spare rooms. One will be nicely decorated into a spare bedroom and the other one, which is close to the entry, is empty. It will have double doors and is across from our 'formal' lounge. I was thinking of a reading room. One wall with books, two chairs and what else??? Can't really find any pictures on the net, all the ones I come across are very traditional and remind me of Harry Potter Any ideas guys. I'm totally prepared for your honest opinions STUDY on the floorplan Re: Home library / reading room??? 2Jul 04, 2008 9:38 pm Where are you going to have your main TV area?
If the TV is going to be in the family room at the rear, which looks a larger room with less traffic flow, and the living room is more a quiet sitting room, then the study would make a good quiet reading spot. Also by using the study for this and whichever of the minor bedrooms for a spare room, then guests have more private access to the toilet and bathroom. And a robe for their clothes. Do you have a child who will be using the other minor bedroom? And where will your computer area be? In the study with the books or elsewhere? Re: Home library / reading room??? 3Jul 04, 2008 9:48 pm If it is just going to be a reading room I would just paint it a nice rich (warm) colour, full wall of timber book shelves (floor to ceiling), prints on the empty wall and some nice comfy chairs. Oh... too Harry Potter?!
What colours are you using in the rest of the house? If that is your current electrical plan you may want to think about adding at least 5 more power points (opposite walls in bedrooms, extra point in family room etc). We added stacks and still didn't get it right - cheap to do now, expensive later! Re: Home library / reading room??? 5Jul 04, 2008 9:52 pm Els One wall with books, couple of nice chairs, fireplace and our wall piano.... that's what I want in our next house Els Hmmm... yes... we have 15 boxes of books to find homes for. I'm thinking we should have built a floorplan with a proper library, not just allocated one wall! Re: Home library / reading room??? 7Jul 04, 2008 10:00 pm Rikster has a room with great built-ins that would be perfect for books. It's on his main thread in the Building a New House forum. A window seat would look nice in your reading room too.
Judie Re: Home library / reading room??? 8Jul 04, 2008 10:35 pm In the living area, one wall with books and another wall with a nice sofa, what do you think? That area should be a bit quiet because away from the family area which i think you will put the TV there...
while you are reading in the living area, you can also view your courtyard and enjoy the sun properly... (using my imagination).. The study area can be a spare bedroom, or just study (with table and chair and a desktop properly)... Someone else who wants a reading room! I am converting the formal living room in the house we are building into a study/library. I have ordered a big bookshelf that is 2m x 2m and has an attached ladder that slides across the face so that the higher shelves can be reached. On either side of the shelf will be big cosy reading chairs. One chair will sit in front of a to the floor window. The other will be in a corner with a lamp. Between the two windows will be a desk and opposite the bookshelves will be a couch. Some people want a home theatre but this was my dream room. Ever since I was a little girl I wanted a proper reading room so I can have all my books at my fingertips. To Kill A mockingbird and Wuthering Heights get a workout once a year at least and I love reading Plath and Shakespeare. Yes, I am a nerd at heart. Also it sends such a wonderful message to children about the beauty and importance of books. Much nicer message than a home theatre in my opinion. And the library of books itself can be such a family work of additions and favourites. A room like this was a must for me so that's why I went for a plan without a study. It just wouldn't have been big enough. I'm sorry I've wafffled but it's so exciting to find someone that also wants a reading room. Some people just don't understand. Jo I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. Yes, it is a pity that not more people understand the beauty of a reading room and of books in general! If only I had more time in a day to read more books again... Els Re: Home library / reading room??? 11Jul 04, 2008 10:54 pm Our designer didn't want to include a place for our bookshelf , but we will definitely put one in. DH and I are both of the opinion that kids learn by example...all 4 of ours love books and have learnt that from us.
Back on topic, I recall that Cabinfever has mentioned wanting a library. He may have some ideas. Personally, I love the idea of reading in the sun, so maybe a window seat...just a thought. Yep.....one of the first things we did with our older boy was make sure we had a bookshelf in his room....this is before he can read so he had books around him. Loves flicking through the books, being read to, or going to the library. In the lounge we always made sure his books were on the bottom shelf and....well a picture tells a thousand words..... I heard, or read that somewhere. Love it. When my SIL got married and tried to move her bookshelf into her DH's house, he said..."And where do you think you are going to put that?" Their kids don't like reading....I wonder why??? I'm also going to have a library in my new home. I think books really do give the place a 'soul'. love it!!
I want to get my sitting room turned into my library. I will have one wall full of books, one daybed in there (coz they look so relaxing) and maybe a nice classic looking armchair, if the budget stretches that far. Re: Home library / reading room??? 19Jul 05, 2008 6:20 am our 6 x 6 home office will have a complete wall of bookcases. mostly for work related books and files but I also have about 10 other huge boxes of books that are just for pleasure reading. We are likely to also have one of the other walls in there half covered with bookshelves as well because in the last 3 years my Dh has also caught the reading bug . When we sold our house we got rid of a few old chipboard junky bookcases and only brought 3 nice bookcases with us. We are going to need to get another 5-6. Re: Home library / reading room??? 20Jul 05, 2008 7:22 am Our upper lounge area will be our library. 1 wall with book cases from Ikea then 3-4 different comfy chairs & reading lamps.
