Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Jul 12, 2015 2:17 am Hi Everyone, Am hoping for just some thoughts on whether I should be bothered with the thing that's bugging me below. We're settling on our Simonds house this week. We upgraded our bath and in the contract and colour selection documents, it states clearly it comes with a 'chrome waste'. However, instead of a chrome waste, they installed a stainless steel waste with a white plastic insert...I expected a one piece fully chrome waste. Pic below is what they installed. Weeks ago, I raised this concern and they said they will try to swap the plastic white insert with a metal one but they couldn't find one.....so I had to give up. I went to plumbing stores like Reece and Tradelink today to see if they have a metal insert but they don't. It's bugging me becuase when I went to Masters and had a look at the wastes there, I saw the aluminium waste and could see how cheap it was and really not what I paid for. So it's gnawing at me. What's a pain though is that if they fix this, they'll need to knock out a tile from the hub to reach the waste. Should I even bother............. AAAAaaaaahhhh. It will stop bugging you after a while. How satisfied are you with your Build with Simonds? My build is about to commence. Were there many issues during the build on quality or anything else? Was your SS approachable and accomodating? Where did you build? I am building in Wollert Melbourne. Re: Simonds Bath Waste - Chrome Upgrade but not Chrome Insta 3Jul 12, 2015 7:09 am Why are you offended with it? Looks fine to me. It screws out easily to clean. Being plastic, makes that easier. Metal can pit/corrode a bit with age, so screwing out becomes difficult. The pipes below it are plastic anyway, so why worry about 'quality' of such a small piece? If you see any workmanship that doesn't meet you standard, speak up quick because things move quickly (and you dont want it covered over). The site supers are great (been on this forum a while and only read/heard good things about Simonds SS). But because they only visit sites a couple of times a week, its possible things can get missed ... Same of any volume builder. Best advice I can give is to be respectful when requesting rectifications to any issue. I deliberately avoided the word 'complaint'. It pays to have a positive relationship. This goes for anyone you do business with Re: Simonds Bath Waste - Chrome Upgrade but not Chrome Insta 5Jul 12, 2015 8:22 am TomCat goody59 I wouldn't bother as the repair to tilling and hub could cause issues down the track. There may be times that I will insist on something and I have trouble backing down but my wife will be a calming influence. I will do my best but I won't except poor workmanship or bull**** excuses. I will arm myself with the tools to avoid having to accept poor workmanship as in private Building inspection, access to the 2015 relevant NCC building and plumbing codes, Standards and Tolerances and this forum and google. Rectification request sounds like it will be my buzz words throughout the build rather than complaint. When it comes to my build with Simonds, there were some dark days both pre-build and during build. However, I'm now in a good place, know my house inside out and can't believe we'll be picking up the keys on Wed. We built in Whitehorse, knock down rebuild. My SS is ok, was told he's the most experienced but also mean a quick build.......both pro and a con. TomCat Why are you offended with it? Looks fine to me. It screws out easily to clean. Only offended due to having upgraded all other wastes in the house to Chrome. This I would have expected to be a one piece waste in fully Chrome as it's an upgrade too. The whole waste won't screw out as the plastic grate is a pop out grate, ie. nothing to latch onto to screw the whole waste out. Otherwise, I could have changed it myself. But your point about pitting and corroding is a great positive as after you take out the grate, it's just a big hole so easier to clean and unblock if needed. TomCat Just keep your eye on things. This goes for anyone you do business with +1 for what Tomcat says, you need to remember they are a volume builder and will build according to regs. However, I have to give credit to my SS as his finishes are great and has gone above and beyond in some areas. I mention some darker days above but things have turned around heaps. goody59 That sounds like a good attitude to have Tomcat. Good to know your regs, good to have a private inspector. Just be mindful that sometimes some things that you think aren't acceptable are, eg. I recently had to research and find out it is ok to have 10mm of pooling of water in gutters. I actually read that same thing last night looking at the downloads from NCC 2015. So many interesting things to learn I know. I have an interest in building. I worked for 4 or 5 years as a casual builder's labourer years ago for the guy who built my first house in 1986. I did 2 extensions on that house as an owner builder on the tools for most of the complete build. I only had a plumber, electrician, tiler and plastered. The rest I did on my own. It was on stumps. The only advice I'd give is that you can't expect a volume builder to build to the high quality you'd build yourself.......it will drive you mad......trust me. It's not an easy process being a detailed person but the end result is worthwhile. Good luck!
