What colour sand did you have? 2Jun 30, 2015 11:40 pm With that sand and normal cement you will get a light tan/dark cream mortar, which looks like the colour of your bricks in this pic. That's what happened to us in our first build when we asked for "grey" mortar. If you want anything close to white it won't happen with that sand unless it is being mixed with white cement (brighton lite). Re: Who has offwhite mortar? What colour sand did you have? 3Jul 01, 2015 12:40 am Howdy. We have off white cement with white sand. The sand is very white and not at all orange. I'll take a picture tomorrow for you. I forget what colour your bricks are. Maybe there's a reason they are using this coloured sand with the off white cement?? Maybe it will match the bricks better? Check my photos out one my thread for off white cement with white sand. Build thread: viewtopic.php?f=38&t=75302 Re: Who has offwhite mortar? What colour sand did you have? 4Jul 01, 2015 12:55 am Okay, they've definately delivered the wrong stuff then. Thanks peeps. They are slurry bricks.. Peachy/cream base clay with white/cream slurry textured coating. Our mortar should be close to that slurry color. Yes, hopefully like yours gandn. And thanks bluesteel I don't know what colour the cement is as it hasn't arrived yet, but I'll get onto our SS. Re: Who has offwhite mortar? What colour sand did you have? 5Jul 01, 2015 9:43 am Doesn't look right to me, but perhaps they are using a 'white' cement. The first brickies who came out to us used a white sand and normal cement, the brickie who came out to to the job after the first one pulled out, use white cement and a normal looking sand, but certainly nowhere near as yellow or orange as your photo shows. What colour sand did you have? 7Jul 01, 2015 12:05 pm I just got told sand was right but I now that I've checked costs of cement (20kg bags)... there's hardly any diff in prices. Certainly not enough for me to have paid $1900 for 'off white mortar'. $7 normal mortar $9 off white cement $15 white cement I heard it was the sand that costs. Well, they can pick up their orange sand then Re: Who has offwhite mortar? What colour sand did you have? 8Jul 01, 2015 5:09 pm I don't know how much the orange sand costs but we just paid $240 delivered for 4 tonne of white sand. This was the cheapest i could get it when i rang around in my local area. Realised i had already posted a photo that shows our sand. Build thread: viewtopic.php?f=38&t=75302 Re: Who has offwhite mortar? What colour sand did you have? 9Jul 01, 2015 7:16 pm We paid for off white mortar and our sand was orangey yellow. Definatley not white. We had off white cement bags mixed in ( not all of them by the way had many left over. Our mortar although not standard isnt what I consider off white. I think the white sand may have made a difference who knows. Re: Who has offwhite mortar? What colour sand did you have? 10Jul 01, 2015 7:54 pm Hey TC, we too are having off white mortar and sand definitely not that colour, more like that posted by gandn. Custom build Northern NSW viewtopic.php?f=31&t=72217 Re: Who has offwhite mortar? What colour sand did you have? 11Jul 07, 2015 9:11 pm Hi, my brickies didnt offer "off white" when i asked. Only std greu or white. Our sand was PURE white.. and sonis the resulting mortar. Not sure if that helps at all, but the orange seems a bit odd. It is very bright. That was the colour of the sand our tilers used to work the base of our shower recesses. Re: Who has offwhite mortar? What colour sand did you have? 12Jul 12, 2015 7:33 am gandn's brickwork (and mortar) is stunning. Brickies are now using 'white' sand with the white cement. Though it looks greyish, not really white, but I'm happy. Yes the orange is still there, maybe for tilers to use now. Thanks peeps! Re: Who has offwhite mortar?
