Yay I am so excited, they asked if I'd like the handrail stained or painted white to match the risers...I had no idea. So just went for stained....can change it later on though. I agree that stairs are quieter, but I have lived with both carpet and timber stairs and for me I prefer the look and ability to clean of the timber, hence why we chose to timber. My kids are noisy wherever they go so carpeted stairs won't make a difference My karma ran over your dogma Re: Staircase 24Jul 01, 2008 9:02 pm Actually just after people's opinions, had our contract appointment today and was asked whether I would want a staingrade handrail to match the treads of the stairs or a white painted handrail to match the risers?
The painted handrail is cheaper, but I'm not sure which would look better.. Any suggestions?? My karma ran over your dogma Re: Staircase 25Jul 01, 2008 9:16 pm Me again! Sorry, I should shut up.
I'd go for the stained to match the treads. As you go up and down the stairs you see the treads more so it matches and I think it makes the rail a nice feature. (Like in rikster's house) It will look stunning stained with the stainless steel. Jo I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. When you look at it with the carpet it is hard to tell, but if you look at the bottom steps with the painted risers and stained treads I think it looks great with the white handrail....nice and light We have to pay $650 for a stained handrail and I'm thinking this money could be saved if we opt to just have it painted... The painted will go with your paint and the stained will go with your stain $650 is nearly half of the ducted vac
BTW, those stairs/staircase look lovely. Funny that PD/H/toun never went through the staircase options with us......surprise surprise Happy at Home Re: Staircase 31Jul 02, 2008 10:14 pm That is what I was thinking H2B, I thought hmmm either would look ok and that money could go towards something else I really want and it won't be a compromise so to speak
I thought the white would also look nice against my wall colour, sort of like the white cornices and doors trims etc...and also the stainless steel stairwell lights I meant to ask you, with the option of the light in the landing instead of the batton point in the ceiling, did they charge that as an upgrade? Did you have to get a void put in the wall or did you just get a batton point/junction point coming out of the wall... Also the only handrail you will see on the Cremorne stairs is at the top half of the stairs, so only really visible when you are half way up the stairs...I'm off to the displays again tomorrow so I will check to make sure My karma ran over your dogma Re: Staircase 32Jul 02, 2008 10:21 pm We just swapped the ceiling batten point to a wall batten point. No charge. There is no way I'm ever going to reach the ceiling to change the light and we don't own a ladder......Steve' 6'6" but he might even be pushing it!
I think the stairs will look really nice either way Happy at Home Re: Staircase 35Jul 03, 2008 5:24 pm I have just been out to the display at Caroline Springs and the Cremorne there, it has the white painted stair rail with the silver balustrades we want! It looks great!! So we will be getting this option - and saving $600+ dollars!! My karma ran over your dogma Re: Staircase 36Jul 03, 2008 5:29 pm Happy for you Bel. Glad you were able to see it in the flesh (or metal and wood). Cost of timber staircase? 38Jul 07, 2008 11:43 am Hi Bel
How much did PD charge for staining the whole timber staircase? We too are building with PD but only doing timber stain for the first two treads, hand rail and painting the risers.. I think they are charging us around 500 for it. Now after reading some forums we too are thinking of asking for a change to timber for the whole staircase? Thanks, Sat Our Entertainer - http://ausdreamhome.blogspot.com/ Re: Staircase 39Jul 07, 2008 4:01 pm Interestingly enough I have 2 quotes for the staircase, one was for $1888, the other was $3888 and that was for the stairs (Treads and risers) stained and then I had to pay an additional $680 to have a stained handrail
This is why I was thinking of sticking with the white handrail, but I'll be interested to see which quote they use in the actual contract price. I wonder what others building with PD have been charged for this?? My karma ran over your dogma Re: Staircase 40Jul 08, 2008 1:44 pm That is a big diffference - 1888 and 3888...
