Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Jun 07, 2015 9:05 am HI We are having bricks done on our new home and I have noticed an articulation joint in the garage brick wall however inside the garage a 230x230 brick pier is going over that articulation joint to hold the frame up. I was thinking wouldnt this defeat the whole purpose of an articulation joint? I was thinking if the brickwork shifts and needs to crack isnt it going to crack both side of the articulation joint now as the brick pier behind the articulation joint is tying it altogether as one piece? Any brickies care to shed some light and educate me. Thanks Re: Articulation Joint in brickwork 2Jun 07, 2015 9:30 am I would check your builders complete engineering drawings there should be a standard detail. There are variables and design criterias that dictate where AJs should go..Ref masonry small buildings AS4773.1. I also tend to agree with you havings an AJ in the middle of an attached garage pier doesnt make sense...it should have gone either side..BTW photos do help. What should I do here as this doesnt look right to me? http://i833.photobucket.com/albums/zz260/bsb20092010/ajoint_zpspcchlvgo.jpg Re: Articulation Joint in brickwork 4Jun 08, 2015 9:41 am 6banga HI There I have checked on the Ground floor plan the AJ joint as per the plan I have has the AJ in approx the middle of the 2 piers shown in the below photo. What should I do here as this doesnt look right to me? http://i833.photobucket.com/albums/zz260/bsb20092010/ajoint_zpspcchlvgo.jpg I would say they would have to rip up the wall and start again IMO ..... Unless they come up with a solution...lets see what other say on here. 'It's not the size of the dog in the fight, it's the size of the fight in the dog.' Re: Articulation Joint in brickwork 5Jun 08, 2015 1:25 pm Not the wall. The piers would only be fastened to the main brick wall with brick ties so to demolish that pier on the left and move it half a brick sideways would be relatively straight forward process ( unless they have been spaced according to certain dimensions and can't be moved ). Even if the builder didn't move it, because the piers aren't bonded as per a brick bond, any movement in the main wall would only result in a crack to one of the internal corners of the pier and certainly wouldn't create a structural problem. No big deal in my book. Stewie Re: Articulation Joint in brickwork 7Jun 08, 2015 2:13 pm Coz' they are brickies! It wouldn't be the first time brickies moved something like this to suit their brick courses/bond etc because it suited them better than what was drawn on the plans or engineering specs.
