Browse Forums General Discussion 1 May 26, 2015 3:37 pm Hi guys I have an 18 year old home in WA with copper plumbing – that has recently developed that horrid “clunking or shaking” noise on opening or closing off the taps. Seems to be primarily at the kitchen flick-master tap - & adjacent taps. Is it likely that the washer (or like) in the kitchen tap is the issue is isolation? - Or is it a sign of a bigger issue? Any clever way to diagnose? My thanks! Re: “clunking or shaking” noise on opening or closing off ta 2May 26, 2015 4:55 pm May be water hammer ? There are a few ways to alleviate. Local Bunnings might help - or you may need a plumber. Does it happen all the time - and does it happen when you turn the tap on full quickly ? How long have you been in the house ? Flick-master taps are a real problem as they can be turned of very fast. There are some solutions here (http://www.anewhouse.com.au/2013/05/water-hammer/) The Harder You Try - the Luckier You Get ! Re: “clunking or shaking” noise on opening or closing off ta 5May 26, 2015 11:07 pm Im in Perth i have the same frustrating problem. It is most evident furthest from the mains, on machines operated by solenoids! (washing machines and dishwashers) A good thing to do is get someone to flick it on and off and go up in teh roof and find if the hammer is actually a pipe hitting a rafter or knocking in the bricks. If this is happening the solution is simple, bracket down the plumbing with more clips. If this is not happening, then it is true water hammer, which is the surge of water itself causing a sound, or it could even be water hammer causing both that and the pipe to hit something as well! Bottom line, start by bracing all the plumbing and testing for where the sound is coming from. If it is coming from the end of the longest pipe, it is water hammer and you will need to install an arrester. Best get the plumber in to do that, i take no part in issuing advice for people to start doing their own roof plumbing!! Re: “clunking or shaking” noise on opening or closing off ta 6May 26, 2015 11:26 pm It will probably be water hammer as AM says. It is basically a volume of water at high speed being stopped suddenly and/or not enough brackets securing the pipes at close enough intervals. Either that or you have really high water pressure. Replacing the kitchen mixer with the same sort probably won't help. You need to either choose a soft close type of mixer that has like a shock absorber inside or install a pressure limiting valve or a water hammer arrester valve. Some kind also have ceramic discs which can break causing a few issues. Is your washing machine close by? I've heard that some can make the pipes noisy when their solenoid valves start to wear. You may have to isolate the problem by trial and error. Stewie Hi, I have a steel frame house which was built 2 years ago.
