Browse Forums General Discussion Re: Facade colour 21Jul 03, 2015 7:28 pm We started look about 6 months ago and saw the huge price increase of about 10% in March this year around the Rostrevor/Magill area and decided that we won't be able to build what we want if we get those land... oh well, we ended up with a bigger land with a much lower price so that's a positive for us 2015 5 June:Land settled 21 Oct: Planning consent granted 2016 28 Jan: Development approval issued 25 Feb: Foundation prep begins Re: Facade colour 22Jul 03, 2015 7:32 pm Jin Will definitely look into off-white cement and light yellow sand. We were thinking of flush mortar, not sure how it would turn out. Will ask the brickie about rolled mortar. Being able to talk to the brickie directly is really good, and you don't get that opportunity with the bigger builders. Flush mortar should work fine as well: it's mainly about de-emphasising the mortar. The Brickie should also be able to give good advice about matching the mortar colour to the bricks. Re: Facade colour 23Jul 03, 2015 7:37 pm Our site manager does some brick laying work too so he is happy to provide advice about bricks and mortar. Will definitely ask him about it 2015 5 June:Land settled 21 Oct: Planning consent granted 2016 28 Jan: Development approval issued 25 Feb: Foundation prep begins Re: Facade colour 24Jul 17, 2015 6:32 pm how do I add photos?? currently building our house... 13 days till completion date :/ our roof is colourbond "basalt" I wanted a similar colour to your picture... basalt is much too light!! I recommend going at least 2 or 3 shades darker than you want, when the sun bounces off it, it appears much lighter. im actually pretty bummed about how light it appears, like I said, I was after a similar shade as your heritage pic Re: Facade colour 26Jul 17, 2015 6:56 pm sorry for the spam. I just figured out how to do pictures tho! as you can see on the right hand side, where the sun is hitting the roof, it looks very silver, compared to the left which is shaded a bit, and looks it "true" colour, which is a darker grey. unfortunately. most of the time, it just looks silver Re: Facade colour 27Jul 17, 2015 6:57 pm Yah picture works thanks heaps. Your roof doesn't look too light to me actually. The heritage styled roof looks a lot lighter imo. Hmmm. We were actually told that Basalt might be too dark (we are using dark/black gutter) and the basalt won't give enough contrast. Site manager advised us to try Shale Grey. Re: Facade colour 29Jul 19, 2015 2:52 am Hey Jin, good to see you getting closer to starting. That's a lovely facade and will blend in well for your area. I love the Santorini (random.) brick. It's same family as mine (bianca). In the random pattern with flush mortar it will like like limestone Re: Facade colour 30Jul 19, 2015 11:11 am Hi TomCat, weather has been much better lately so hopefully more progress on your build . I remembered yours was aubergine brick? We are tossing between flush or rolled mortar, can't wait to see yours. 2015 5 June:Land settled 21 Oct: Planning consent granted 2016 28 Jan: Development approval issued 25 Feb: Foundation prep begins Re: Facade colour 31Jul 19, 2015 3:04 pm Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ ...as you can see, depending on the light, the roof can change colour dramatically Re: Facade colour 32Jul 21, 2015 11:10 am Thanks datambo, is it just me or there seems to be a slight blue tint on the roof in some of the picture? 2015 5 June:Land settled 21 Oct: Planning consent granted 2016 28 Jan: Development approval issued 25 Feb: Foundation prep begins Re: Facade colour 33Jul 21, 2015 4:51 pm hi jin, sorry, i rushed my last post so some of the pics didn't turn out. yes sometimes it does have a blueish tint, it can be dark blue-grey, dark grey, medium grey, light grey, silver, depending on the lighting. I remember this was a stifling hot day, in the mid 40s, theyd sent all the trades home because it was too hot. high sun mkes the roof very light Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ another sunny day, with minimal cloud cover, and minimal glare. roof looks dark grey-blue. Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ this picture was taken in the back corner of our property... so its a bit far away. but this was a high glare, bit of cloud cover kind of day... roof looks silver. almost looks the same colour as the roof across the street... their roof is white Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ minimal glare on this day, but a fair amount of cloud, roof just looks grey. I find it changes colour a lot. it never gets darker than its actual colour, it only gets lighter. which is why I recommended to go a shade or 2 darker... otherwise you'll end up with a silver roof 50% of the time. Re: Facade colour 35Jul 21, 2015 9:32 pm Yeah, thanks Jin. I'm going to check out our build tomorrow. Hopefully bricks are near complete. Though we did have a bit of rain ... We have normal rolled mortar. I asked for flush but Simonds wouldn't accommodate. We thought flush would look great with the 'Bianca' brick, giving us a nice Mediterranean look. If I were in your situation Jin with the Santorini random and an accommodating builder, I'd definitely go flush And your cream bricks continuing around the back will definitely look best IMHO Re: Facade colour 37Jul 21, 2015 9:37 pm Thanks TomCat. The fiance likes the flush mortar, I am not fuss so will most probably go with the fiance's preference.
On a side note about tiler if you are still looking around, a friend highly recommended their tiler, I think it's called 'virtuoso tiling' or something like that. Re: Facade colour 38Jul 21, 2015 9:38 pm Your first comment about cream brick was in fact correct. SS suggested to use normal cream brick rather than torino, looks better and costs less 2015 5 June:Land settled 21 Oct: Planning consent granted 2016 28 Jan: Development approval issued 25 Feb: Foundation prep begins Thank you @.
