Browse Forums General Discussion 1 May 21, 2015 11:46 am Hi All, I how you well. Some of you might have seen my previous thread regarding the conversion of a shed into a teenagers retreat / games rooms / visitor sleep over room. The general feel was that I should go ahead, which i will be doing About the shed.. The shed is colourbond and is 3.7m x 2.6m, which sits on a concrete slab. The height of the shed (from the inside) is 2.1m (at the highest point), and slopes down to 1.95m. There is also a window in the shed. The structure of the shed consists of 4 horizontal steel beams / rods (around the base of shed, middle and top of shed and across the roof), which are about 80mm thick, as well as a vertical poles in the corners and middle of the walls. See attached pics to illustrate. Lining the shed… I need to line / insulate the shed, something I have never done before. I am looking for a cost effective solution, which is fairly easy to implement. I am not overly concerned about appearance, but should still be nice enough for a teenagers retreat / visitors short stay room. I also only see this as something I want in place for the next 5 years or so (which is why i dont want to spend too much on it), which I might look at replacing with something better (in terms of a proper additional room). The shed walls.. I was thinking of just attaching some plywood / MDF panels directly to the steels beams, putting some insulation between the panels and shed walls. Then giving the plywood / MDF panels a paint. The other alternative would be plasterboard, but then that would require me to build another wooden frame to fasten the plasterboard to. What are your thoughts on this? The shed roof.. I actually don’t have any idea (at this stage) as to how I would line / insulate the room. As the height of the shed is quite low (2.1m to 1.95m), I would want to maximize the height I have by lining / insulating the as close as possible to the existing shed roof. I don’t plan to put a light on the roof as the light is currently fixed to the top rail on the wall, but will attached a smoke alarm. You guys got any ideas? Look forward to hearing from you guys and thank you in advance. pictures to follow.... Regards, Robbie Re: Lining and insulating a shed 3May 21, 2015 2:47 pm With regards to lining the shed walls, i have 2 options in mind: 1: Fasten 7mm ply wood sheets (2400mm x 1200mm) to the 3 wall rails (top middle and bottom). I could fasten them vertically or horizontally, but my only concern is if there would there be enough support due to there being no vertical studs? 2: If i decided to put in some vertical wooden studs, how would i attached the vertical wooden studs to the existing horizontal metal beams? If i could do something like this then i could potentially use plasterboard as an option or a more supportive frame for plywood. Any advice? Re: Lining and insulating a shed 4May 21, 2015 4:16 pm The shed framework does not look structural. It may not be able to support the extra weight of plasterboard. One possibility is to build light weight steel stud walls (say 65mm studs) and tek screw them to the shed posts. This would provide a cavity for wall insulation (and possibly a vapour barrier) and also allow running cables to extra power outlets. The wall could be lined with either plywood (which is an easy DIY solution) or plaster board (which is cheap) but requires flushing the joints. If flushing is beyond your skill set you may need to subcontract this out. Your may also need provide a timber frame (using joinery grade timber) around any windows or doors to get nice clean details in these areas. robbie_p thanks, so simply fastening plywood boards to the 3 horizontal beams is not an option? If you plan to go down that path I would fix steel ceiling battens (40mm x 25mm) vertically between the top beam and the floor at 600mm centres max. Then screw and glue the plywood to the ceiling battens. These ceiling battens are very cheap and available at Bunnings. They only come in about 6.3m lengths so you would need to cut them down to length using tin snips or angle grinder. I would still install wall insulation. Here are some photos of how I lined my shed using a combination of steel ceiling battens and steel studs. Re: Lining and insulating a shed 10May 25, 2015 10:12 am robbie_p Any ideas for insulating the roof? If it doesn't already have anticon on it, then install some, even if it means taking the sheeting off then reinstalling it. After that put some timber up so that you leave around 75mm (or more) gap between the anticon and sheeting you put up there, and add some R2.0 batts in between (or if you make a larger gap, you can put in higher R rated batts. Re: Lining and insulating a shed 11May 28, 2015 11:27 pm Hi all, I am going to start with the lining of my shed walls this weekend, really excited. Decided to go with 7mm ply, attached to the existing frame, which consists of 3 horizontal beams. The biggest panel of ply will only be 1700mm(length) and about 1000(height). They will be fastened along the lengths. I will be putting R 4 insulation wool between the shed walls and the ply lining. Do I need to put some sort of moisture barrier between the shed walls and insulation wool (to prevent potential mould)? The trades guys at bunnings said I should use some sort of foil looking lining, which would be attached to shed walls with liquid nails or tape? Is that definitely needed? Also, any concerns or tips with the above before I start? I plan to do the roof in the coming weeks, just need to do some more research. I ended up using vertical Zinc celing battens space about 50cm apart, with foil sarking and insulation batts. I am just about finished the wall with the door and hope to complete the final wall (with window) this weekend. Once thats done, ill do the roof (foil board) and floors.
