Browse Forums General Discussion 1 May 21, 2015 1:01 am Hi All Can anyone tell me if flat roofs or roofs with very little pitch cheaper to build? Also, has anyone got a detail plan for the flat roofs that sit below the parapet wall. They are quite often on architecturally designed modern modular houses. I don't even know what they are called to google them. http://modscape.com.au/projects/cottesloe/ I put a link in for a picture of the roof style I am talking about. Hope someone can help. Re: Flat Roofs or very low pitch roofs 2May 21, 2015 7:47 am I assume you are talking about a flat roof, parapet and box gutter scenario. I don't know about the costing difference but I would assume they would cost more seeing as you have to form up and finish the parapet plus all the framing around the box gutter etc. Here is a typical "flat " roof. Note sometimes they aren't flat - just a low pitch and the parapet wall hides most of the roof from the front. You can of course get a metal roof down to 1º pitch if you really wanted to. http://www.builderbill-diy-help.com/parapet-gutter.html The big thing with this type of roof is getting the box gutter detailing and installation right. A lot of them fail because they weren't designed properly to begin with and then not installed correctly. Stewie Re: Flat Roofs or very low pitch roofs 3May 21, 2015 7:54 am A roof can be Flat. Re: Flat Roofs or very low pitch roofs 4May 21, 2015 10:06 am There's a reason you don't see parapet walls on mainstream houses. If they're along the gutter edge, it means a box gutter. They're expensive, fiddly, and prone to leaking. For example, if you get a big hailstorm, the hail can block up the gutter, and the parapet wall traps the ice and water. With a regular gutter, at least it can overflow outside the house. Parapets are not so bad along the other edges of a roof, but you still end up with a more expensive roof, spending more on roof timbers and then flashings to seal it all up. Also, the flatter you go, the more problem you have with leaks around fixings. Hello! I've alfresco pitch of 3 degrees sitting just below the highlight window. Need advice on below: 1.
