Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Apr 27, 2015 4:25 pm Hi all! We have just finished building and love our home. We built next to an empty block so of course were aware that eventually they would start building. So far so good... A few minor issues such as starting to lay the slab at 5.30am on a Saturday morning (with a baby who was up all night teething) and an incredibly dirty site, rubbish everywhere. We've just put up with it. Last week they starting doing the brick work - such a messy job! Mortar was flying everywhere, including over our windows, fly screens, fence and alfresco area. I spoke to the builder and he sent some guys over to clean it all up. They did a very ordinary job and I spoke to he builder again and different guys came to clean it. In the end I finished it myself as it was never cleaned properly. Today they've been cleaning the brick work off and dirty, muddy water from the high pressure cleaner is now all over our windows and alfresco area again after I cleaned it all. Would that annoy you? Should I speak to the builder again or just suck it up? I don't know whether I'm being over the top now that they've annoyed me! TIA! Re: Would this annoy you? Living next to building site 2Apr 27, 2015 4:32 pm Good questions, interested in answers Re: Would this annoy you? Living next to building site 3Apr 27, 2015 10:18 pm Put locks on your external electricity outlets and water taps to ensure that your utilities aren't being used by them when you are not home. This has happened to a few people I know and they had to pay a heap extra in their bills because of this. All of what you have mentioned would annoy me for sure. Is there any possibility of talking to their foreman about it? Is it a big builder? Do they have a head office you can contact to complain? Re: Would this annoy you? Living next to building site 4Apr 28, 2015 4:41 pm During brickwork they would use cement as well & might be spreading it all over your driveway or on your windows, make sure you wash it off in time because if the cement hardens, it would be really difficult for you to get rid of it without using acids & that too leaves patches sometimes. Not sure if the builder would respond to your complaints, you better try contacting your local area council. Re: Would this annoy you? Living next to building site 5Apr 28, 2015 4:50 pm You most definately have the right to be annoyed. I know in our contract the builder is responsible for ensuring neighboring properties are not unreasonably affected by the dust and debris from our build. Contact their head office if you can or the local council as they will be able to help you also. Re: Would this annoy you? Living next to building site 6Apr 28, 2015 5:00 pm If no joy with talking direct to Builder or the tradeies in the first instance, id be lodging a complaint with Council and getting them to come inspect and ensure they are undertaking their works in accordance with their building permit/licence. Re: Would this annoy you? Living next to building site 7Apr 28, 2015 6:53 pm Make sure you take pictures. Also I would be putting it in writing to the builder with a date you expect a response and things rectified. Then take it to council when needed if not actioned by the builder. Thats how I would handle it. Hope it works out for you. Re: Would this annoy you? Living next to building site 9Apr 29, 2015 11:04 pm I would take journal notes of dates and times of when stuff happens, and as mentioned earlier, photos galore. You never want it to escalate or get ugly, but if you have evidence, you aren't seen like 'crying wolf' and 'just another whinging neighbour'. Your credibility will be rock solid. Your evidence vs a sloppy concretor - I like your chances with the judge. Home is where the lot is Construction commenced 3rd November 2014 Re: Would this annoy you? Living next to building site 10May 02, 2015 2:45 pm I encountered similar problems while they built the house next door to us. They even removed our gate and part of our fence because their garage needed to be built along the boundary. Our dog got lost a few times during that time and we had to build our own better quality temp fencing in the end. Just when we thought it was all over the destructive hail of March 22 2010 came and broke tiles on their newly completed roof. More trades were called for weeks. We are amazed by how much disregard SOME tradies have for cleanliness and for others. Luckily they were the minority but we still suffered for months with some of them. Most building companies have their own internal policies requiring decent care and cleanliness so your best bet is reporting it to the company. It may not seem like they are changing their ways but for all you know they may be penalising the trade that is causing your problems so hopefully they will learn quickly to take better care.
