Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Apr 14, 2015 3:21 pm Hi All Have built a carport with a storeroom at the rear and an open front. The front is supported by a metal post (uni pier) in both corners. The posts are bolted to the slab. These will be surrounded by brick pillars (350mm square). Should the bricks be tied to the metal post to strengthen it or just leave a cavity to allow the post to flex without cracking the brickwork? Any views/information appreciated Re: brick pillars 3Apr 14, 2015 7:03 pm Thanks Beetaloo. I will ask the bricklayer to do as you suggested. The pillars are about 2.4m high and the metal posts quite stable. Would you also fill the cavity (about 25 mm around the post) with mortar? Re: brick pillars 4Apr 14, 2015 7:30 pm Personally I would not fill the void with mortar as light gauge brick ties will give a little flexibility which I think is a good thing. However others on this forum may have other opinions (if the voids were filled with mortar there is no need for the brick ties) Re: brick pillars 6Apr 22, 2015 12:42 pm I concur on steel corrosion with mortar / concrete fill. Also the additional weight added to the slab may cause the slab to fail if not designed to suit the weight. under assumption the slab etc has been designed to take the weight of the brick pillars Da Vinci Outdoor Living Architectural landscaping http://www.davincioutdoor.com Re: brick pillars 7Apr 22, 2015 12:50 pm Thanks everyone. Yes, a substantial pad footing is in place under the corners, where the posts sit. The metal posts are galvanised. Been delayed by wild weather in Sydney.
