Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Jun 24, 2008 10:29 pm Hi, just wondering if anyone has ever used the Hebel 75mm power panel wall system for external cladding on houses before? I am use to using brick or weatherboard, but am looking at using this hebel product for my new house due to cost, speed of construction and insulation values.
Any comment from people who have used it would be most appreciated! Pete. Re: Hebel external wall cladding 2Jun 24, 2008 10:33 pm Hi builerpete,
Interesting that you say you want to use it due to cost. Is it actually cheaper to use than other materials? The reason I ask is that it can be used as an upgrade on some facades and they sting a pretty penny for it. Jo I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. Terrence Malick Re: Hebel external wall cladding 3Jun 24, 2008 10:45 pm the supply cost on the hebel panel including fixings and adhesives works out to be approx $40/m2. Bricks are around $500 per 1000, and my brickie is charging $1100 per 1000 to lay, and my renderer is charging $33/m2 for 15mm finish.
At the end of the day the hebel is working out cheaper as i can install myself (hence no labour cost) and only a 5mm skimcoat is required at approx $18/m2. Adding all this up i am looking at 1/2 the cost to use hebel. I havent had much experience however (well actually any experience) but the supplier did offer to come out for a few hours to start me off on the install.. Im just curious to know whether anyone has used it and how it went Re: Hebel external wall cladding 4Jun 25, 2008 2:02 am We used powerpanel on our house and are happy with the product.
However you really want tradies who are familiar with the building system and therefore better at constructing it. The panels need to be fixed straight as any joint instability or unevenness shows up easily following rendering. The weight of the hebel is also an issue on 2 story homes, & you have to take care due to joint bulging. We were very pleased with the guy who did our place but he spent a long time making sure the panels were straight and was very skilled at the job. I've also seen some less than ideal hebel jobs around and have not been impressed. In Adelaide the cost for bricks versus hebel is about the same depending on the builder. Many charge extra depending on their buying power (we were quoted around 10K extra by some builders). Our builder quoted the same for both bricks/hebel but we chose hebel for other reasons (insulation value etc ). It does go up quickly but then you have to render twice + paint so it ends up about the same. If you can do it yourself you have that advantage but I'd certainly ensure the panels are straight. Any comment from people who have used it would be most appreciated! Pete. There's other alternatives too - we're building out of ICF which is a polystyrene formwork filled with concrete, gives insulation as well as strength and you can put it up yourself very easily (although I personally am too scared I would get it wrong!). Bear in mind that if using concrete in your house you might need considerable extra engineering done. Right now the price of concrete and steel is going through the roof, steel as a raw material will be going up 25% on July 1st (this will affect anyone having a colourbond roof too). So there may be other costs to consider in addition to the ones you have mentioned. Simon Building an architect designed home out of Insulated Concrete Forms on acreage in semi-rural SE Melbourne. Someone's doing a blog on it, but they haven't started yet - and they made the comment that they are PD's "guinea pig", as theirs will be the first hebel house PD have built. I'm looking forward to seeing it go up.It's the Windsor 47 ( a double storey house) they're building , I think . Should be interesting. I wonder if I can ask them the question again, now that Petal says they are using it.... My karma ran over your dogma Re: Hebel external wall cladding 8Jun 25, 2008 8:52 pm I'll find the link and pm you , Bel (you might have to be patient, I have very limited computer skills!!! ) Also, one of the new single storey houses on display at Caroline Springs (sorry, can't remember the name, but I've been to it!) is a "hebel house". Maybe have a look on the PD website. Solidarity, not solidity.......The Lexicon of Life Re: Hebel external wall cladding 10Jun 25, 2008 9:10 pm Builder pete
I'd also subscribe to the free magazine published by Hardie Products. Someone else posted a link to it here and the mag arrived in 2 days and is a great read. Itá all about their sycon product - but in Brissy it'd be high on the list of my exterior material. They are claiming 15 years between painting.
